Might want to reconsider the female moogle name, Fern...

I saw that Fern posted the naming conventions of the beast tribes. One thing that stuck out for the naming conventions for female moogles with their name with the example of Pukla Puki. Puki in Tagalog (Filipino language) translates to the female genitalia. Might what to reconsider naming a female moogle that!

That's just my two cents, though. I thought I would have liked to mention that seeing as we users can't post on the thread he made, so I just wanted to put that out there.

On the other hand, it does sound similar to a lot of other moogle names we've seen. It's perhaps inevitable that a name here or there might be dirty in one language or another.

It doesn't help that Pukla Puki the Pomburner is an existing moogle, the BLM during the Moogle fight.

Yeaaahhh I dunno if that's ever really something that can be truly avoided. I mean, you can /point in the game, and in some cultures, pointing with one finger is considered very rude.

If people are going to get offended, let them. If people are going to let their culture or language get in the way of their gaming, let them. They won't be able to appreciate the story and world and lore around them, so it would be their loss. /shrug

Also, another thing of note, is that the game is not translated to Tagalog, nor is it sold in the Philippines by SE. As far as SE is aware or concerned, no one in that country is being marketed to or sold their product, so unfortunately, SE can't really be expected to cater to a demographic that they aren't attempting to market to. If they did, however, they would probably have their absolutely baller localization team come up with appropriate names and conventions that would suit the Tagalog language.

So I wouldn't worry too much about this sort of thing.

At a certain point, you have to accept that with the hundreds of spoken languages in existence, you are eventually going to name someone genitalia in another language. Heck, English speaking people name their kids after slang for genitalia.

This is a really silly complaint, and I'm fairly certain you know that.

Exactly, and even English itself falls into this trap, given there are many different regional vernaculars with many different meanings on the same word (for a FF, but not FFXIV, example, back when I first played FFIX, during the Festival of the Hunt, I couldn't help but giggle when I saw Steiner's line where he says to Vivi "The princess and I are rooting for you!" - in Australia, the verb 'root' is a slang/informal term meaning 'to have sex', and thus, the unfortunate implications. Naturally I immediately realized it was the American meaning, which is to cheer on or support someone.). So hence it's kind of impossible to allow for all possibilities of quirks of language when translating for the game.

I am so glad I am not the only Aussie that giggled at that line, too! Yes, yes, we're totally mature

Throwing my hat in with "This is going to inevitably happen a lot. We should just giggle and move on."

I know a few Spanish speakers that giggle every time they switch to leatherworker.

I think it's better than naming her after male genitalia.

This isn't a complaint, I was just pointing it out. I found it odd to name a female moogle that name, that's all.

except this happens all the time in some random language with some random word, and it's a pointless nitpick.

doesn't matter if Puki in Tagalog means female genitalia or devourer of babies, because its NOT in Tagalog. It's in Moogle, and the meaning in any other language is irrelevant.
