The design is just very different than the previous games. Which is why people are thrown off.

First the egi is always out in the field of battle. In previous FF games, summons were a lot more about resource management and timing. Egi's feel like a flat dps upgrade. Your main focus is applying Dots, not Summon management.

Sigh..I dont know, the 2 hour abilities are really what set the FF 11 apart. It was a cool design. This game is different and I guess that is fine. In the end I feel like Egi's too closely resemble the elemental summons from 11.
