I like OP's idea. Spells don't feel like spells, you know? They feel like weapon skills that cost MP, at least to me.

Also I like the idea of learning skills from mobs, I'm rooting for a Blue Mage sort of job for sometime in the distant future.

Agreed. They don't feel like spells at all. I find magic more sensible and appealing when learnt through scrolls or quests or mobs.
Would be nice to see SE pump some creativity into magic and skill learning.
