Cloning WoW itself was the biggest mistake imo, but I completely understand where you are going regarding flying mounts; unless they add sky interaction or something, idk, "Shrugs"Square Enix, you have the advantage of learning from the mistakes of the past with this game. One of the biggest mistakes in the history of WoW was adding flying mounts.
It completely neuters player interaction in the game world, one of the prime reasons I left Azeroth was because I was the only other adventurer there, unless someone else wanted my mining node.
It's become a really big problem for the game, revealing itself to cost a lot of time and resources to REMOVE from the quality of the game as a whole, and caused the developers to completely ignore any kind of development of the game world as a result, resulting in 10 year old problems that still plague its design, no one caring because world exploration is now a "single player" experience.
Man I swear, this community is toxic, everytime you post anything you get repeatedly insulted by most everyone in any thread. I'm never coming back here again, you people need help.

In one of the live letters they did say they would consider adding flying mounts when more expansions will be up and running with other continents being accessible.
That being said, I don't see how a flying mount would negatively affect interaction between players in any way. There will always be people gathering in places, be it around certain NPCs (Look at the wineport invasion for the first coil and now the Fallgourd Float invasion...) or objects (Doubt there will be flying market boards...?), and even so we have plenty of distance-proof chat systems which are already more used than the /say channel. Hell, I'm a roleplayer and I've been actually harassed for using the /say channel.
I keep saying this to all those who flame others' requests when it comes to adding things or options to the game: if it's not a suggestion that will affect your gameplay, then don't argue against it. Someone wants more minions and you don't? You don't have to use them. Someone wants more ponies and you don't? You don't have to ride them. Some people apparently want flying mounts, and unless you can explain yourself better with valid resources I don't see how their presence in the game would affect yourself, they will not ruin the game for you, and as such the idea should not be flared. The developers are working to make most of the community happy, not you.
Because I like to see people on the ground when I too move through areas, on the ground. Don't need people in the air moving at 400% speed. Gives more of an MMO feel for me, and I consider FFXIV to be an MMO. If it would not affect my experience, add them, add like 1000 of them. However, it does affect me and so many others, so please SE, just don't.

The "flying" part is probably a magical city in the skies or something in that line. It doesn't equate to flying mounts. The areas are too small anyway and teleport fees can be ignored considering the amount of gold you earn from dungeons now.

Maybe they are just implementing the airship into the FC house like they said in previous letters dating back to beta. People are getting all worked up over it being flying mounts. Maybe the airship will be used to access the new island dungeon!! Maybe their is a new dungeon or quests that are only accessible from free company raids via the airship . They have mentioned both airship and free company quests in previous letters so the possibilities are open to the imagination. And with SE's lack of disclosure its hard to tell exactly whats planned in the future.
opening of 1.0 .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDSnzcaLaZg
so wait people are complaining because it would leave the world an empty shell. Teleports have already done that so introducing flying mounts would make no difference tbh. If flying mounts were introduced it would be a new open area only use bit like early WoW where you couldn't use the flying mounts in the original areas that was only opened up much later in cataclysm and required an overhaul of the original areas.

Nah, it would just make it even more worthless. People still have to move from the crystal to a location (though few exist to move to). With flying mount they will then skip everything between THOSE two points. Vanilla WoW required you to run past mobs, and brave some crowded areas in high level zones. With TBC literally everything was skippable.so wait people are complaining because it would leave the world an empty shell.
