I'm level 45 WaR and my friend is like 17 GLA...

Can we play together and do stuff or do I need to wait for him to catch up? He's a real life friend so I'd like to be able to go around and do things, but our levels just are too much of a difference. Can he team along for a t map? Or I don't know what we can do?

well you can tank in dungeons for him if you make a pre made (I did this with people) since they will sync you down and premades have no role requirements (use party finder or should really doesnt matter if you have 2 tanks anything pre 50 and even then back when people thought AK and demon wall was hard I did it 3 tanks and me as a healer) you can do fate stuff with him you could level another job up with him.

Honestly your best bet would be to level a second job up alongside them. Maybe take up healer? As two tanks, there won't be much you can do together until you hit higher levels (I believe the level 45 final guildhest is the only 8-man content below level 50...) Or, at least, not much you can do without either a pre-made or using the sparse open-world content.

Your biggest problem will be that the fact that you are two tanks.
There isn't much for two tanks to do together at low levels. At endgame, a lot of the fights will require two tanks so you're good for that. ^^

My advice, pick a class to level with him- healer does nicely and do dungeons w/ him on that.
With that, you will have half the party made and you won't have to worry about derp healer.
My sis and I did that, with me tanking and her healing. Best decision ever~

yea, heal for him

he'll catch up twice as fast, you'll level another class for variety/cross-skills, ques will be instant for all dungeons

Healing sounds like a good option, I really wanted to take up goldsmith with this character after I got him to 50. How do u use the party system to enter in dungeons together? That sounds cool.

In a party of 2-4 just queue using the dungeon finder like any other time just like when solo, your level will be synced to his... Be aware that unless you have a full 4 member (or 8 depending on what you are doing dungeon wise) you are restricted to the party composition of 1 tank 2 dps 1 heals if you have a full party you can go in as whatever 4 jobs you want
