Can I progress in storyline without doing dungeons?

Not everyone enjoys doing dungeons, I definitely don't, especially when I have to take hours out of my day just to find a duty for one.

So now I get to a point in the story where I have to be a certain item level to do a dungeon, which requires me to constantly grind dungeons to get mythology.
Have Square Enix considered that not everyone enjoys that endless grind and some just want to chill out and enjoy the story? It's upsetting that I am now being told I have to change how I play games.

Is there an alternative for players like me? Thanks.
I don't want to have to switch to another MMO that isn't about grinding and dungeons, because no other online game has such a beautiful sense of adventure and atmosphere as A Realm Reborn does.
But do I even have a choice? This game seems to be built for one kind of gamer only. Surely they would make more money if it's fun for everyone?

Why can't the main storyline just give you the right gear to progress? Then if you want to work hard for better stuff you can.

    You have to do them.

That would be the short answer, yes. You have to complete the dungeons to continue on with the main scenario. If you have to rely on duty finder for those, it can certainly pause your progress.

As for making a game that everyone can enjoy....such a thing is a myth. There is no way that you can design any game that will cater to everyone. You can TRY but there's going to be some people (like yourself) that will have different expectations on how they want to spend their game time. For MMOs, there is no "I beat the game" type scenarios. There's constant progression and that involves dungeons/instances/raids for gear drops.

If you're looking to gear up quickly, no, dungeons are the only way to do this. Beastman dailies and treasure maps both reward you with Myth/Sold. But this will take a extreme amount of time to build up a good stock of these tomes.

Can't they just allow the vanilla storyline to give you the right gear to progress? Then if you want different or even better stuff you grind for it.
Of course they can try and cater for everyone. Isn't that the point?

but in the story you kill primals, it is infact the main crutch of the story to defend the land from primals..

so how are you meant to progress in the story if you never actually want to kill ifrit..

    etc.

That may be beneficial for you, but then you have the "hardcore" dungeon people that get upset because they have to work hard on their end-game progession while you would just have to complete a story line quest. And honestly, there are much more people that follow that mentality than what you're hoping for.

The question remainds, why do you dislike participating in dungeons that much? Other than doing the quests (which you will eventually run out of unless you roll alts to do them all over again), gathering and crafting, there isn't much point in even playing an MMO unless you're into RP and sit around chatting with people all day.

they do. everything before 2.1 story continuation provides gear and is pretty vanilla. when you hit 45 and 50 you get your 1st endgame set by just doing a quest for your job. 2.1+ there are requirements because the content is a little "harder". the thing is 2.1 was about 6 months after release and most players were already at the ilvl required. Surely joining in aug 2013 you may have noticed that. so half way they cater both way imo. if you want to continue past the original 2.0 story you have to do minor gear upgrade that push you a little into the endgame. if you want better gear overall you have to work for them

To a point yes. Unless the quest specifically tells you to do a certain dungeon. Then you can skip that shit until later.
You'll be missing out on dungeon drops specialized weapons and armor if you skip them completely. And later the hard mode dungeons are they only way to gain tomes effectively.
But until level 50 shouldn't be an issue if you don't ggrind the dungeon chain all night. Just don't forget to do one a day for your extra bonus roulette.
