I think it would be better if they just allowed us to send a friend request to an offline character...many times I've wanted to do this, not for sending stuff to characters on same account.

IMO the real flaw is not allowing you to mail items to your alts. For FC members, probably shouldn't require a friend thing either but otherwise, I don't mind it too much.

Would it really be that hard to automatically add your same-server alts to each character's friends list? O.o Of course no one wants RMT to mail them! It's not like the system can't see who my alts are (and no, I may not want them all in the same FC.)

I don't know about sending items to alts, but being able to leave other players messages that aren't on our friendlists would definitely be helpful, Especially your FC members or potential recruits that may not log on at the same time you do.
It'd be nice to be able to send letters/messages regardless. Perhaps not items as I could see the imbalance it may cause; maybe that option can be greyed out or disabled unless that person is on your friendlist.
I'm not convinced that opening up the mail system would result in an increase of RMT activity. If you look at *ahem* ... WoW, you can send mail to any character and very rarely if at all did I ever see mail advertising RMT services. Besides this if it ever did increase RMT spam, I would much rather they all went to my Mog Mail than having to manually deal with 20-40 spam tells per evening. If it means that I can mail between my alts, then that is a consequence I would gladly accept.
Besides this, an easy way around would be to implement in-game mail filtering. When turned on only mail from SE, friends or FC members would stay in your inbox. All other mail would go to a junk section of the mailbox. Someone tell me this would work, because I am certain this is a way forward.

Here are my issues:
1) I can press square on an RMT in the chat log, and black list them. Can't an option 'Report as RMT + Blacklist' be added? If i simply send an automatic generic report of a username spamming RMT, you can't check your system and their chat logs to see that i'm right and action needs to be taken?
2) Trade between accounts. Why not? But I agree that limitations are needed. How about "well, you can only trade stuff you could buy from an in game vendor or can craft yourself.
3) I realise the system for non-friends mail is in place to minimise RMT spam etc, but damn right i should be able to mail people in my FC. They don't want me to mail them? Give me an FC list of "allow mail from". Some simple check boxes, i can add and remove FC members from my mailing list as I see fit. Spam me, lose the privilege of mailing me.
Also , to whoever posted the comment about Moogle Special Deliveries: +1 .. fantastic idea, that would be cool as hell as a crafter!

While I don't necessarily believe that SE nixed mail between characters on one account because they planned on implementing monthly-fee retainers, now that they HAVE monthly-fee retainers that's pretty much the nail in the coffin when it comes to the idea of ever freeing up mail.
I think we can all agree that being able to mail stuff to other retainers on your account pretty much invalidates the need to buy extra retainers. If you don't have enough space, just make another character and send the extra junk there! So, if they were to implement it now, it would be a slap in the face for folks who pay for retainers now AND would result in pretty much everyone with extra retainers cancelling them immediately.
But on the flip side of this, people who like to roll alts (for reasons of variety, or perhaps to be incognito for an hour or two every so often) can not easily mail stuff between alts. I know you could ask nicely and perhaps your FC will let you use the vault to transfer (assuming both alts are in the same FC), or parhaps getting someone you trust to be a middle man. It's still not ideal in both scenarios.

if they gave the 3rd retainer an ability that was well deserving of the monthly fee people would pay for it and square could still allow players to mail their alt's. Say with the 3rd retainer it could learn a crafting job, or it would have access to other allowances like an 24 hour 4 token spirit binding venture where it would spirit bind gear for you. there are innovative ways to get players to spend extra money while pleasing the mass and allowing them the simple ability of sending mail from one character to another. Most people would probably keep the 3rd retainer anyways just so they wouldn't have to log out log in find item run to mail log out log in go to mail.

Because it would be too difficult to determine whether a character was tied to the same user account as the one you're playing? I have more faith in the power of the developers than that.
On the other hand, RMT does own shout in the cities. So perhaps things I think should be relatively simple are indeed more complex than they appear. Or perhaps SE developers are not as sharp as I think they are.
