Coliesem would be cool, but PvP should be something just for entertain betweenthose top players who has no goal to enjoy the using of their gear.
This shouldn't involve in obtaining any end-game items like WOW does, or it would be a huge discourage to those people who dislike this to leave the game. and I know so many FF11 players who doesn't play WOW because of this reason.

Sterling had a great idea with the gear bought through the arena.
This in short would give the PvP player base a home, and a fun little side trip from the adventure of the storyline.
I for one would like to fight others to gain gear to help my fighting in the Coliseum.
Even if the gear is stored only in the coliseum with a NPC storage area specifically for that gear, would free up inventory slots as well.
Can even put up server score boards opening up the competition.
Aggreed. PvP and PvM is begging to be implemented through the coliseum in Ul'dah.
The quest requiring you to battle there lead me to believe it was a way to earn gil when I was still new to the game. I was definately disappointed to find out that the coliseum is not functional. Even players not wishing to participate in PvP can enjoy the action from the stands if they desire. A few thoughts:
PvP
*Once the match is set, spectators have 5 minutes to pay admission and get transported to the instance. Everyone is moved back to lobby following the battle.
*Charge admission for spectators (per fight)
*Charge an entrance fee for the participants (various stakes- 10,000gil/ 25,000gil/ 100,000gil)
*Various brackets to participate (1v1/ 2v2/ 5v5)
*Winner takes all (minus 20% going to the coliseum)
PvM
*Once the match is set, spectators have 5 minutes to pay admission and get transported to the instance. Everyone is moved back to lobby following the battle.
*Charge admission for spectators (per fight)
*Charge an entrance fee for the participants (various stakes increase the difficulty of monsters- 10,000gil/ 25,000gil/ 100,000gil)
*Various brackets to participate (1/2/5players vs. 1 wave of monsters[1 round], 1/2/5players vs. 3 waves of monsters[3 rounds back-to-back], 1/2/5players vs. 5 waves of monsters[2 rounds, 2waves then 3waves])
*Winner takes all (minus 50% going to the coliseum, to cover cost of capturing the monsters)
*Winning a match earns Coliseum Marks
*Losing match will cost Coliseum Marks
*(Someone else can find a use for Coliseum Marks)
*No SP, experience, or loot given from monsters- Coliseum is meant for entertainment and challenge
