Noob question here about the materia slot...

Do I have to do a quest in order to unlock being able to put materia in weapons and armor? I'm level 38 MAR, and 15 GLA... With the help of u guys I got warrior and wow what a huge difference.

Yes. You need a crafter at least level 18 for the quest. Also, to add materia you need a crafting class (the same one which can repair the item) at the same level required to equip it.

Yes, however it requires that you have a crafter class up to lvl 19 and speaking with an NPC at the Bon Fire [It's in Central Thanalan kinda NE ish of Camp Black Brush, it'll appear on the bigger map] Afterwards the corresponding lvl of your crafter is the lvl that you can meld things and class you can use in melding (ex. Blacksmith lvl 29 can only meld equipment lvl 29 and below that can be repaired by blacksmiths, ect.) Though you also need something called Grade 1-5 Carbonized matter to meld your materia to. I believe there should be a pop-up tutorial after you complete it so there are more details there. Though generally if you want to meld without the lvl grind, you can ask around in the market area to see if anyone can meld for you instead, then right click and request meld on them, but you will need to have the materia and carbonized grade matter on you
