Of all the crafting items to make money...

    Hello all,

I'd like to do a crafter of some sort, but I'm not sure what sells best on the market. Are people buying armor, weapons, food, jewelry?

    Any advice would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Starkman

Doesn't matter, level them all. All of the special abilities earned from the different classes can be used on the other crafting classes as well. In order to make high-quality items (Which are the main things that sell), you'll need abilities from all sorts of crafting classes.

That said, what primarily sells are level 55 armor (used for spiritbinding and starting endgame. Also includes jewelry), level 55 weapons (used to start making a relic, and occasionally as initial endgame gear), high level crit, determination, and DoL/DoH food. In addition, keep an ear to the ground. Markets change ALL the time. Don't just look to one market and go "This is my home." Because sooner or later a patch will hit, bots will invade, and undercutters will run rampant, and you'll have to move.

(Oh, and I should add: I rarely craft to sell items, this is based on my observation of what items are desired moreso than what makes a profit. That will, of course, vary based on server)

    Thanks much, Urthdigger.

My real objective isn't so much to make a profit—have heard that gil isn't that big of a deal, for the most part—but to just provide what people seem to want.

That said, if gil is important for certain reasons, it certainly wouldn't hurt to make some!

    Thanks again,

Well, in order to guarantee HQ rate on high level items, you're going to need a lot of materia invested into an endgame crafting set. And that'll cost a hefty chunk of gil. Charge what the market will bear, then turn that money back around into funding your crafting. Gotta help yourself to help others.

It depends on your server market. As with any economics concept, supply and demand is different on every server.

Mostly people seem to want crafted materials. A few can be gotten from beast tribe vendors (ie. Mythril Ingots, Undyed Velveteen), so those have a price cap, but they tend to move quickly, since people use them up quite quickly. For those not supplied by beast tribes, I'd say they're mostly high level crafting materials, like Cobalt Ingots, Undyed Felt, etc. At the moment I don't think any of the beast tribe vendors sell leatherworker crafted materials (ie. Aldgoat Leather, Toad Leather), so there's another option to look into.

Another way to make money instead of via crafting, if you would prefer to put some effort, is to craft i45 accessories, spiritbond them, and convert and sell the materia. You can also do this in conjunction with either leveling your chocobo in the open world (boring grind, but you get some achivements and some chocobo bardings), or in simply dungeon runs like Wanderer's Palace. I noticed in your profile you are only Level 27, but this is more for end game.

For low level spiritbonding, you can try spiritbonding lower level crafting or gathering gear - even at Tier 1, their price can go pretty high.

Well, there you go: gil is necessary (...hmm! How can I sucker everyone into buying...) I MEAN...ahem. Carried away there for a moment!

Okay, so that gives me something to work on.

    Excellent. Thanks much.

I don't know what the case would be on Jenova since it's a new server, but myself and a couple FC members have made some nice gil providing High Quality low level equipment that had absolutely no supply on the boards while leveling up our crafting classes. It's something worth looking into especially since you get bonus XP for making an item you never made before.

Quick low level profits is leveling your Leatherworker to make leathers from scratch (this means killing the mobs for skins yourself and possibly getting Miner to 20 for Alumen) and selling them on the wards.
It's not the fastest money but it's certainly one of the easiest. And there's always a market for finished Leathers of all levels, especially Toad Leather.

    So, final thoughts about this...

Besides this forum, what are some good website sources for getting a good and solid all-around understanding of crafting?

http://craftingasaservice.com/ - site to manage crafting leves, crafting gears, etc.

http://xivdb.com/ - database on all things FF

    And of course, Reddit.
