I've got a sneaking suspicion that this is going to be tied into Company content.

Settlements: Think campfire with 4 Beastmen of same race but different types. (Likely to link each other)I noticed a difference in terminology in regards to beastmen.
Beastmen "settlements" will be in the 1.18 patch.
Beastmen "strongholds" will be in the 1.19 patch.
I wonder what the difference is ...
EDIT: Did the Development Team ever announce what they were planning on doing with the existing hamlets?
Download my iPad app on the App Store http://bit.ly/10QMy4C ^^
We've already seen a beastman settlement in a picture (the kobold one), basically just a few huts and things not unlike our own ones. I imagine strongholds will be the central hub for those particular beastmen, like the strongholds of FFXI.I noticed a difference in terminology in regards to beastmen.

Also, we haven't heard what the plan is with the existing hamlets, but I wouldn't be surprised if we got some defence orders from the grand companies involving them.

Because this game is still new, there are alot of area's blocked off for future content. It is very obvious from traveling around they made big plans for the future... and that was already something they admitted they focused too much time on. In time most of those blocked off passages and invisible walls will turn into dungeons and new zones. This goes goes for some of the buildings as well. Some are just waiting for future implimentation of currently unknown systems and events.I hope we'll be able to go inside these structures. That would really help sell the fact that these buildings really exist in the game world--they aren't just props. There are too many closed-off buildings and passageways in FFXIV, especially as compared to WoW and FFXI.
Given the stress that the development team is currently under, I would understand if these particular buildings don't have interiors. However, I hope that by the time the world redesign hits it will be possible to enter most of the man-made structures in the game.
EDIT: It looks as though Munba and I posted the exact same idea at the exact same time. Weird.
....does that mean that we win some sort of prize?
In every other MMO there are houses you cannot enter, but you need to ballance it with a few that you can enter,

I feel nothing copy-pasta at all about walking through Coethras. It is very obvious from traveling around they made big plans for the future... and that was already something they admitted they focused too much time on.![]()
who really cares anymore? Yoshida already confirmed full map redesigns for the future. Give it a year and you (hopefully) won't even recognize the zones.
I wish they would have at least painted the same building different colors to try and mask the fact that
both houses are the same for each region.
Color change?
Moving things around?
Not the same building?
Owell, VERY good news though

Pretty cool. I like how they're throwing all this surprise "HEY GUESS WHAT ELSE IS IN 1.18" business.

It's great news and i'm glad they don't all look the same.http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com...1edf0f2c9247b4
Excited!
edit: for those don't reach the lodestone page,
Settlements take on various shapes and forms, and are intended to serve as landmarks and bases of operations for adventurers. Future patches will usher in more features to enhance their practicality, with each location set to become the backdrop for an assortment of new quests.
The Black Shroud
Buscarron's Fold
A solitary shack situated at a glade along the Lumberline and serving as a watch house, the care of which has been passed down through the Buscarron line for generations. To this day, members of the family keep vigil over the road’s security, all the while maintaining a life of self-sufficiency.
The Hawthorne Hut
A trappers' hut named for the legendary Hawthorne, scourge of the mountains. Now residing there is his descendant Rolfe, a retired adventurer of some repute, who is joined by his loving wife and daughter. Together they welcome all travelers with open arms and heartfelt hospitality.
La Noscea
Halfstone
A young colony established on the Vylbrand frontier, named for the rocky stuff that pervades its soil. Owing to the backbreaking efforts of resourceful settlers, what little arable land that exists was made to yield a modest crop of fruits and yams alongside lavender and other rugged native species.
Red Rooster Stead
Established by a botanist as an experimental farm, the homestead hosts myriad agricultural undertakings such as the selective breeding of livestock and the research of foreign produce. Its proximity to kobold territory has given the residents no recourse but to turn to pirates for protection.
Thanalan
Mythril Pit T-8
The site of a mythril prospecting operation under the management of Amajina & Sons Mineral Concern. Miners and guardsmen alike have taken up residence in the lone habitable structure there, an abandoned inn that had not seen use since hostilities erupted with the Amalj’aa.
The Coffer & Coffin
An inn frequented by trade caravans, its name derived from a folk song which tells of an optimistic man bound for Ul’dah. The traveler drags along a stout chest, which will become either a coffer to hold his winnings from the gambling dens, or a coffin to bear his own lifeless corpse home.
In addition to the above, beast tribe settlements will also be implemented in patch 1.18. And by way of a sneak preview, imposing strongholds and larger settlements of the beastman persuasion are slated to appear in 1.19—a development that could only bode ill for the peace and prosperity of Eorzea.
