they already said it takes 6 months to make new gear...
But I suppose it would be less effort on their behalf to shred a piece of gear than to make it from the ground up.

wow 6 months for gears...... dang...
Dance like you mean it !
It may sound fun, but becomes annoying like Soul caliber 4.
It's actually quite easy to implement, since we already have equipment damage, just a simple sub routine to swap out graphics(and add some fancy transition effect, which is also relatively easy). The problem is the content creation as others have said.
Not worth it in the greater scheme of things, leave it to SP games.
it's easy to implement from a programming perspective, but for the artists, it is time-consuming. Making several more variations of models for every piece of equipment, that will take time. Considering the complexity of the gear we have at the moement. It may sound fun, but becomes annoying like Soul caliber 4.

Perhaps if they would merely reskin the material or remove a couple of elements (a buckle here, a sleeve there, etc), it wouldn't be too hard, but making it look half-way decent would require a bit more effort, I suspect.
I would rather have visual representations of mob-incapacitations than player gear-damage. But in a perfect world where we could have everything, I would like visual representations of gear damage too.
Seeing a dent or two in the armor when damaged would be a very nice realism effect.
Square did this with the PSP game The 3rd Birthday and just made Aya look like a total slut. I am not for this idea just so sad pervy teenagers can stare at half naked Miqote. Not that this would ever happen in FF XIV anyway i'm sure they are busy working on ideas that aren't quite as pointless.
i laugh when i read the thread title, it make me smiles.
um last i checked a minor system like that is already in FFXIV, i noticed it first when playing THM and using a silver scepter.
After awhile it was worn down and needed repair, then i noticed it had lost it "Silvery" luster,
after i got it repaired it had taken on the shiny luster once again.
It's a tiny detail but i know it was there, havent played for a few weeks now so idk if it still holds true.
But ya i know what uyou mean, you want it to be abit more visual i guess.

I used to be Noomy...then i took shiva's Hail Storm to my knee...
A visual indicator of gear damage? why not! sounds like a great idea. Whenever your gear loses durrability it will look damaged and weared off. Repairing it will restore it's original look. This system from Kabod Online (Korean MMO) very impressed me when I tested the close beta of the game
should we have it for FFXIV? of course with non nudity

I'm sure SE will reply with a "our servers does not allow such a feature to be implemented but we appreciate the feedback"
