Am I doing it wrong....or is there no way to see what the gear looks like prior to actually using it?
This seems like a huge oversight if that is the case. Actually wearing the gear looks NOTHING like the tiny picture in the tooltip....

IIRC there is a gear preview planned for a future update.
Well you don't actually have to use it, but you have to have it in your inventory. If you are talking about an item you don't own, then no there is no way to do this. If you pick Glamour though, and use an item in your inventory, it will give you a preview before you actually proceed with the Glamour.
If you want to see what the glamour will look like, equip the item. As long as you don't engage in combat or crafting while wearing it, it won't bind to you, and you can resell it.
Just to clarify: If you don't like it, then you can resell it. If you actually use it for glamour, then it will bind to you. I guess they want to prevent "glamour borrowing".
Just wear it? It will look exactly the same if you glamour it.
