I was pondering what form of self-renewable content SE could bring into FFXIV that would make the game fun without necessarily forcing us into the vertical progression.
Similar to the housing system, I would like the propose Free Company (FC) dungeons -- or Free Company Gauntlet, as I would like to call them.
Here are the major points of this idea:
Finally, the FC Gauntlet could come in a variety of challenges. Since the FC Gauntlets are player made and lateral content to FFXIV, not mandatory content, we could have a wider choice of challenge.
- FC would have to procure themselves with dungeon area.
This area could be an oubliette built/discovered under their FC house, an Allagan device that creates subspace, a psychic dreamlike construction, etc. I leave that for the devs.
- The FC Gauntlet would be individual instances.
This also gives the possibility to create a roulette for them.
- The FC Gauntlet would come with a weekly access limit. This limit would be in form of points. Once an FC Gauntlet has been run a number of times and used up all of its points, it can no longer be accessed until the following week.
This would also force players to experiences a whole bunch of different FC Gauntlets and prevent farming of certain Gauntlets.
- The FC Gauntlet could have three types of treasure chests:
- an RNG treasure chest based on difficulty, similar to what we currently have in dungeons (pool of loot determined by the server)
- an RNG treasure chest based on difficulty, similar to what we currently have in dungeons (pool of loot determined by the players)
- a fixed treasure chest (loot determined by the players)
For the fixed treasure chest, the loot would have to suit the dungeon difficulty. This could be done by measuring the difficulty of a dungeon based on its elements and the rarity/quantity of the fixed loot would have to meet a corresponding requirement.
- There would be many base templates of FC Gauntlets to choose from.
- single floor of X, Y or Z rooms
- multiple floors of X, Y or Z rooms
- pillar room (big room made of pillars and bridges)
- vertical room with mezzanines
- etc!
Or, it could be made that you purchase rooms and organize them as you wish - like blocks. It doesn't really matter here if the template of rooms are all clones of each others, it is what players make of them that is important.
- There would be multiple theme to choose from:
- cavern type
- manor type
- old mine type
- Nightmare type
- etc!
- FC Gauntlets would be built exactly like FC houses.
- placement of mobs like FC house NPCs
- placement of puzzle-like elements and gates like furniture
- you could buy pits for players to fall in
- floor and wall texture could be changed
- etc!
For example:
This could be a pretty big thing to develop, but if it's done right, it would give a very big breath of life to the renewable playability of FFXIV.
- Typical defeat the boss
- Defeat all monsters
- Gather / craft items, repair or remove roadblocks, etc.
- Platformer challenge (jump across pits with a risk of dying or jump on platforms to access hidden paths)
- 1-man puzzle dungeon
- etc!
