Chat channels?

Chat seems totally dead. I'm lvl 4, in Gridania, I see other playets, but nothing in chat. Is there a chat channel I can join to ask folk for advice etc? I'm hVing a lot of trouble with the awful map. I cant work out where I'm supposed to go.

The General chat is selected by default and if you have questions or need some help try to /shout or /yell - you're most likely to get several replies shortly. Otherwise you can try to join some linkshells of your interrest later on.

What's a linkshell?

Linkshell is a "private" chat channel - you can create your own ones (up to 8) using the Linkshell distributor NPC in each city - in Gridania it's opposite the theater next to the moogle mail. There are many groups of people with similar interests which are using linkshells (lets say crafting or raiding linkshells) to stay in touch even if they're in different free companies (or not in any). The one noticeable benefit of linkshell is that it works even in instances (dungeons and trials) so you can talk you your friends from there as well (and invite them to help if needed too) as normal chat / tells will not work there for people outside the instance.

Aha! This sounds exactly like globL chat channels in city of Heroes. Just what I'm looking for. Can I customise chat tabs, and are there any notable public linkshells for geberal chinwagging abt the game or advice etc?

There are 574 linkshells on Zodiark - http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest..._count=&order=. The linkshells are world specific so unfortunately no one not on Zodiark can really help.

But yes you can customize the chat tabs by clicking on the gear symbol under the chat window.

Thanks for that link. Sadly, the only one with over 51 mbers is a French channel. Ot looks like linkshells aren't used much as general chat chsnnels, at least on Zodiark in English speaking playerbase.

Hm, maybe I'll start one. What level do you hsve to be to start a linkshell?

You can start a linkshell at any level. There is a linkshell vendor(?) near the mail moogle by the Amphitheatre.
