Hyur Midlander. I want to channel myself into the game, not being a totally different character. In most RPG games I play I will be a human. Also, lore-wise Hyur Midlanders are the most educated / literate from the other races.

I went with Dunesfolk Lalafell / Tarutaru because I loved Tarus in XI, my Hume started in Windurst and I regretted never rolling a Tarutaru.
My backstory is that he got sucked in Shantoto's portal to Eorzea from Vana'diel =P (with his Surname being Windurst)
I chose Duskwight due to a combination of love of (not cute/elfin) Elves in general and Lancers/Dragoons from FF:Tactics. I figured that a spear/lance would be a great weapon to use in the confined space of a tunnel and BAM, Duskwight fit the bill (no pole arm pun intended) perfectly. Their skin and hair tones were just icing on the cake.
Well i played a lala in xi and although i loved him, I wanted to try something different, make a character I'd never done before. After reading about all the races and clans, the Duskwight just stood out for me. In 1.0 I was grey with black and white hair and red eyes and followed Halone. After playing through the story and getting to know the nations I fell in love with Ul'dah and decided to put a spin on him. Instead of being a dark and mysterious brooding cave dweller, I chose to give him a lighter side and
... made him more of a mix of dusk and wood, giving him a dark brown skin tone, with an almost brownish purple hair with golden highlights. I wanted to play on the white/black magic by making his parents born of each clan respectively. I also changed his deity to Azyema.
Almost went Miqo in 2.0, but couldn't bring myself to do it. The Au Ra seem like they could be a good match though, but really depends on their lore. I have a pretty intriguing backstory for him and would like to keep it going. Orphaned in the snow, parents killed by an other worldly monster. Raised by Highlanders, given the name Haxaan (play on the swedish word haxan, meaning witch) due to his "demonic" look, and given his sur name Shivar in battle since he was as deadly and cold as Shiva herself. Lots more but a little insight. Freaking love this guy!
I thought "Oh! Cat girls!" I chose Seeker because they have better face choices, I like their eyes, their open personalities, and their interesting naming conventions.
I like Hyur because, well, in a game with a lot of fantastic race options they're the average everyman. I feel like my FC and parties are more diverse when I'm just kind of this average guy. I dont think I'll change to Au Ra when they come out, just for that reason. Even if they do look really cool...
Lorewise, I actually originally had him look close to my old character in XI. I like to think of him as a descendant of the original Darske, who took up adventuring to travel the world and grow from it like his predescessor.
