Hello I'm getting closer to approaching level 50 with my main class.

I'm new to ARR so I am kind of in a bind on what my focus should be before I get to this level.

As it stands, I have been doing as many of the hunting logs as I can and have been more focused on having a full set of Storm gear for my current level.

This is only my second MMO but i am no stranger to endgame so I expect there to be a lot of prep involved before I jump in to the more challenging content the game has.

My question is, what should be my focus at this point before I get to level 50? (45 ATM)
I'm confident in my healing ability now but I'm not sure if I should become more involved with materia for my gear to increase my survivability. (Have no materia equipped on any new gear as I'm not very familiar with that system just yet).

I know first step is to check here and hope the community will have my back, so here I am! First post too, so I thank anyone in advance for the help

I wouldn't worry too much about materia at this point as you'll be getting a lot of gear soon that doesn't have slots. Other than hitting 50 you may want to go after some cross class skills. As a SCH you want Swiftcast and Surecast from THM and Protect and maybe Stoneskin from CNJ. Keep up with your Grand Company ranks as well as the Main Story.

Like Lithera said, keep up your GC ranks as they open content. Make sure you're following your job quest line as well so that you get your first i50 gear.

As Vanity has said: Make sure you're doing your job quests as well. One of the two Level 45 quests for each Job awards part of your "Artifact Armor" (Also known as AF) gear set. The AF gear will be probably the best armor you'll get until you can start obtaining Darklight gear from dungeons at Level 50, or saving Mythology tomes up to buy the higher level gear. AF gear also has no materia slots, so there's little point in melding.

The Scholar's first 4 pieces of artifact gear are obtained by completing the quest "In the Image of the Ancients" at Level 45 and will net you the Scholar's Culottes (legs), Scholar's Boots, Scholar's Gloves, and Scholar's Mortarboard. The Scholar's Gown won't be obtained until you reach Level 50 and complete the Level 50 Job quest for Scholar.

After that, it would be wise to do what Lithera said and level up Thaumaturge to obtain Swiftcast (Level 26) and then further level up Conjurer in order to obtain Stoneskin (Level 34). Swiftcast will be invaluable to you as it will allow you to instantly cast Resurrection or Raise without having to wait the eight seconds of casting time, which is extremely necessary at higher levels if players fall in battle. Stoneskin is incredibly useful damage mitigation, which goes hand in hand with a lot of what Scholar's healing attempts to do.

Thanks. I probably should have mentioned that I have a level 36 WHM as well so I have gotten the stone skin move. Swiftcast is the instant move? So I probably should get my thamauturge up to that level now (18 ATM)

Another question, is SCH in design suppose to be more preventative as a healer? Reason I ask is I notice that when I decide to use my WHM, am reacting to damage more than I would as a SCH. A bit off topic but if this is the case, I'll focus more towards my SCH because that is the type of healing I favor more.

As far as it goes, yes, SCH is a more preventative healer than WHM, with having smaller heals, but applying shields far more frequently and with less opportunity cost than WHM.

A question on the lvl 45 job gear, I've unlocked the first three or four items for the warrior from the missions in Costa del sol, have the last one to go once I hit 50, (48 atm), does the marauder have a separate set or is it tied in with the warrior class?

No, the marauder does not have their own set. However, all armor that is not specifically job-specific (Artifact armor, "relic" armor from mythology tomestones, and relic weapon) that warrior wears can be worn by marauder as well. This includes post-45 crafted sets as well as most endgame gear.

I see, I was hoping there was another class set as the warrior gear seemed to lack a bit and can't be equipped to my marauder. Nevermind, I guess it will be made obsolete once I can start plugging away for the end game gear which can be equipped by both. Not like I was gonna switch back anyway, I just wanted to trade gear for seals and converting but hate the thought of leaving him bare
