Why should I be okay with an "honest mistake" when people in this very thread say they will make no attempt whatsoever to avoid repeating that mistake in the future.

That's a bit too deliberate to be called a mistake at this point. Your actions have results, which you have been made aware of, and if you continue the same actions you do so knowing they will continue to have those results. That's not a mistake. That's laziness at best.

She has a point there. Still even with the instructions someone said to my questions about pronouns I can tell for a fact that I don't see people using those gender neutral ways of writing ever. I can only assume it's not natural way of writing to one another in English. (?)

I would say that endure it the first time but if it bothers you correct them and after that it really is okay to assume they should know.

This is not about the OP's character but as a personal note I would assume someone named Kimmy is female. Kim however could be either way so that's one instance where I might easily make that mistake.
Also thanks to the OP for bringing this up! Really it's great and that's something that I didn't even think about before you spoke up =)

A lot of us have been told for years "I'm a guy" when we refer to female characters in game as "she". So, no matter what, people can't win with this. You're never going to be right 100% regardless. I don't even think most natural girls care if they're called a "he" in game. As they shouldn't, since this is seriously a non-issue.

Yes, you *can* be 100% right about this.

If it's a male character use he/him, if it's a female character use she/her. If someone gets upset at you addressing their character by their gender, it's the only information you had to go on at that time. It's not unreasonable. At this point it's their issue, not yours (because you can rightly say, "Well if you wanted to be called "him" then you were within your rights to make a male character.").

And someone else mentioned "playing it safe". It's like you guys have it backwards. To me, the best way to play it safe is to actually use the character's gender (because none of us know any better). I am beginning to get genuinely surprised now that this isn't the common practice in 2014.

Lily: Are you afraid of my kiss?
Jack: I'm afraid you'll break my heart.
Lily: Then still your heart... You are dear to me as life itself.

I disagree. Way too many males play female characters for you to just assume they're female. And in my experience, they're way more apt to tell you "I'm a dude....". To me, if being called a "he" or "she" bothers anyone, it's on that person to correct people. You shouldn't expect the world to revolve around you. Either grow a thicker skin or simply make a Macro that says "I'm a girl" and make it your life's mission to let the world know.

How can I tell people I'm a grill when I'm actually a potato?

English doesn't have a convenient non-gender-specific third-person pronoun like Japanese does. So it's either pick one and risk offending someone, or say "it". And nobody takes very kindly to being called "it".

"They". The pronoun you're looking for is the singular they.

Well I think he meant "it" as refered to animals. (seeing as miqoutes are not human, btw technically Hyur are not Human too, they just look like them XP)

So we should just call everyone "it"

Also everyone are forgetting not all of us are English teacher (blame SE for didn't list that as minimum requirment for buying the game lol)

Some don't know English well like you do or don't know how to use it. Personally English is far from my main language.

Demoting fictional Sentient Species to the status of Animals is insulting to the sentient species in question. Just because they aren't Humans doesn't mean they are by default animals.

You wouldn't call Vulcan's animals. Nor would you call "Yoda's Species" (yes that is what his species is actually called) animals either (though a case could be made for Ewoks and Wookies I suppose). Therefore you shouldn't classify Miqo'te as Animals just because they have cat-ears and a tail.

I was using a form of Reductio Ad Adsurdum. In this use I was exagerating how many RMT I put on there daily to point out that we have a severe RMT problem in this community and that black listing them is the only realistic way of dealing with them instead of trying to report each and every one of them.
