ITT: People perverting the term beta to justify their hobby.

No, this game is not in a beta. Beta is over. This game is just in a poorly launched state with very slow fixes and has been for almost a year. SE said Beta ended when it ended. Go back and find the pre-launch posts. "Beta period has ended." No matter how people rationalize it, it's not a beta, just a poorly designed final product.

Those joking about it being a beta are obviously not part of my comment.

We're in a situation that doesn't normally happen. So how you define our circumstances is complicated, since the usual terminology doesn't really apply 100%.
Heh, the 'ish' part was actually because you have to pay for the box if you want to play the 'open beta'. While the whole FFXIV story may be a bit convulted, after a quick reality check you end up with the few facts I mentioned above.

Shipp: Semantics. Is beta over when they sell the first box? Or if the actual state of the game is similar to almost every other MMOs' official open betas, is it really wrong to call it that?

I don't pay to play my single-player games either. If there are major problems with the game, I have every right to complain.

Beta is over when the company says, "Beta has ended" and starts charging for boxes instead of just opening up a free digital download. SE had every intention of trying to charge for FFXIV. It wasn't until all of the negative reviews came that they gave an extra month. Then another. Then extended indefinitely until they get it fixed.

They were going to charge monthly for launch. That is when you know Beta ended. The fact that it's still in a stage that most other MMOs would call a Beta doesn't matter. Frankly, Cata's Beta was much better than this game we have right now. When SE gives me the money back for the box, manual, and disc, then I'll gladly call it a beta. Until then, no, it's not.

Yes, as much as people do not want to admit it, and it would be bad press for SE to say it, this game has been pulled back into beta, it was day after it was released......

What developement stage this game is in is obviously decided by the devs. So there's really no point arguing about the "official" stage. But if people call it open beta and by that mean that the game is buggy and unfinished they are 100% right imho.

Beta is the software development phase following alpha (beta is the second letter of the ancient Greek alphabet, used as the number 2. It is not nowadays usual to speak of a later gamma test). It generally begins when the software is feature complete. The focus of beta testing is reducing impacts to users, often incorporating usability testing. The process of delivering a beta version to the users is called beta release and this is typically the first time that the software is available outside of the organization that developed it.

The users of a beta version are called beta testers. They are usually customers or prospective customers of the organization that develops the software, willing to test the software without charge, often receiving the final software free of charge or for a reduced price.
A feature complete version of a software is not yet final, but contains all intended functionality of the final version.

Usually a feature complete software still has to undergo testing and bug fixing as well performance or stability enhancing before it can go to release candidate and finally gold status.
So it's actually between beta and alpha. We're beta for PS3 release. Get over it bro.

EDIT: I don't mean literally. But from a development stand point it is more like a beta version than a release version.

A very good point there. Predicted and/or possible perception by the media and, more importantly, shareholders are likely strongly influencing the press releases on this game. That's a delicate balance...

    Semantics.

Game looks, sounds and walks like an open beta.
