A way for everyone to be happy with level cap?

just to say i hate the idea of riasing the level cap every few years but i had a weird idea from FF11

first off every single game now that i think of it technicly never had a static cap even FF11 didnt have 75 because of a great system of merits so why cant ff14 have something like merits? and ever few years they could increase how much merits we can apply to our stats that way we could progressivly get stronger yet it wouldnt mess up our prevoius gameplay while letting us still "level up" idk if this would fix it but in the end it would also allow customability at the end game portion of the game not the entire game ( which is a diff topic)

    idk any ideas?

Large amounts of horizontal character development is going to make people get even more attached to their items and whatevers; and it's going to make it even more difficult for the devs to increase the level cap eventually.

A better compromise is to increase the cap by smaller amounts, like 5 levels every year. That way new items and gear are upgrades from the previous tier, but the previous tier isn't completely obsolete and can be used as entry level or early-mid level gear for the new content.

merits suck ass leveling up to get merits caused people to do that instead of playing the game, or you needed some merit ablitys/spells to do events.

    please no merits SE!!

i doubt we will have that problem, like ffxi some low level equipment was equal to better than high level equipment. ffxiv dosent work on massive damage multipliers like some other mmo's where you equip says how good you are.

No, because the gear you'd be receiving is still the bulk of horizontal character development (and will always be in MMOs). There will be a point where there are too many sidegrades, or minor upgrades, that the content is simply not worth it. It happened with FFXI's COP dynamis, Sea for a lot of people, and some other NMs.

There will eventually have to be straight up gear upgrades and actual new content eventually, or the game will stagnate in a major way.

Well... gear stats don't do much now anyways. And didn't Yoshi say we're due for a gear and stat redesign eventually?

Personally I'm not a fan of FFXI's OR WOW's gear progress model. In FFXI you got a lot of good gear early on, and at end game everything was a slight upgrade, a sidegrade, or a situational item (like Sea obis). In WOW, the current tier and/or expansion completely obliterates the previous tier and gear feels too fluid.

I'm kinda partial to Aion's gear model, where gear ~10 levels below you is still decent if it's enchanted and gemmed well, but a properly enchanted and gemmed item of your current level is a definite upgrade.

Gear grind and status grind doesn't have to be the end-game motivator... for once in your lives just please think outside the small box you are all living in.

I'm all for Horizontal growth along with verticle growth, it's just hard to find a proper balance so the horizontal growth "If added before a final"Ish" level cap is placed from becoming overpowered is rather hard.

Merits were easy to balance because for the longest time the level cap was 75 so it was a way to customize your character beyond his "Natural" limits. If they decide to add this kind of growth they need to do it carefully and possibly make the growth be something beyond just SP.

I suggested something like it earlier as an "Accomplishment" system where by accomplishing certain feats you became more proficient with certain items/skill/~

its ok, but i think it should be more emphasis element vs element. right now any element does the same damage and any attack does the same damage(slashing, piercing, blunt vs the defense type).
