As much as I like the idea of Chocobos walking around while I craft... I don't like the idea of blobs of choco-poop (lol) and feathers littering the streets.
They should keep to the stables and the race tracks while in city limits.

I think it was never done in FFXI to avoid city clutter, but I recall that in many story cutscenes you would see NPCs riding around towns on Chocobos.
Don't really care either way TBH. I just want a faster mode of transportation across the main areas.
People really so lazy they also want chocobos to carry them around in town too?

I don't understand the point of running around a city on a rented chocobo. Which is what we'll be getting first. It's bloated and unnecessary.
maybe wait until the whiners eventually get their golden rainbow sparkle-bo to desire such a feature.
Keep the chocobos and other mounts outside. First and most important reason being the crowding. Chocobos are huge in game if you havn't noticed. Imagine a bunch (or even just 3 or 4) of people mounted on chocobos all crowding around the guild leve counter or the repair npc or in doorways or standing on top of people trying to bazaar.
Second is lag and stuttering. Cities are already generally laggy enough due to the volume of people all in one spot. Now give all those people gigantic yellow birds to race around with and someone's graphics card is going to have a heart attack.
Third, and this is my opinion, but there really isn't a need for mounts inside cities at this point. The cities are large, but are laid out in a way to where you can get where you need to go quickly. To sum up, I would rather walk than deal with the lag and crowding.
Um, just make chocobos have a slow-run within the city and dont let them go inside buildings. It's illogical that they cannot run though the main thoroughfar though. You guys are too hung up on FFXI and all its rules.
A "slow-run" would defeat the purpose of having a mount and would do absolutely nothing to alleviate lag issues. Keeping mounts outside buildings would be good until you realize that there are quest NPCs and merchants who have stalls outside buildings. Maybe it's just me but I actually enjoy looking at the city and landscapes as I go and not just blindly charging from point A to point B. I'd rather not have to wade through a sea of chocobo arses every time I go into town. Honestly, the only place so far that would support chocobos inside the city is Uldah. Limsa has a lot of small ramps and walkways while Gridania has forest trails and cramped tunnels.
Lastly, I don't really see how FFXI has anything to do with anything I said.

I think I'd prefer it if chocobos were outside only, and I'm guessing that's the way it's going to work. I don't think it really makes a huge difference either way though.

FF XIV: The game where everyone wants more pointless restrictions because they are afraid of WoW and probably never played it.
I'll jump around everywhere I go in honour of you!

It's better than having pointless additions just for the sake of them.
The whole structure of the game is being changed within the next two updates. Unles Square has had the idea of the hulking hens pecking their way through the cities beforehand, It's unlikley they'll restructure it again for such a minor inclution with so little to offer.
They don't have to add every little thing that comes across our minds. Let them finifh the general restructure first, so we can then think about what spesifics would be a helpful adition to the actual gameplay.
All that asside, it seems odd to ride mounts and the like into cities that serve more as an end point rather than a point along a road. Not only that, but these cities really arn't that big. That coupled with the fact that they have one or two restrictive points of entry makes me think that this would be far more trouble than it's worth.
