    Wedding Rites in Eorzea

Given the recent announcement that marriages are part of planned future content, it gave me cause to wonder about this part of Eorzean life. We know a lot about funeral rites, enough that it spawned some interesting discussions about the afterlife, but this is an area that seems, at least at a cursory glance, entirely uncharted. Do we know anything about weddings in Eorzea? A big fear people have had in discussion of the marriage system is the thought that only opposite-sex marriages will be permissible; does the lore support a bias against same-sex attraction?

Simply put, just how little do we know?

Yoshi-P has said at some point he plans to leave it up to the players to handle things. They provide the tools to make it happen, players can choose how to make use of the tools. That way everything is out of their hands.

Well, there are plenty of instances of npcs shown in the game who are married (the Hawthornes in the East Shroud spring to mind). Also the waitress in the Quicksand mentions her husband, a former adventurer "used to be so strapping in his youth."

Presumably each faith of the Twelve would have their own unique rites and traditions when it came to wedding ceremonies, which probably explains why the Sanctum of the Twelve has been restored story-wise for the use of player adventurers - due to the variety of customs of each member of the Twelve, it's just easier from a gameplay perspective to have a central location that can satisfy all customs related to it.

Although same-sex marriages however have not been shown, from a lore-perspective at least there are instances of same-sex relationships shown in both 1.0 and ARR, showing that in Eorzea it's not considered that unusual - whether that extends to marriage however remains to be seen. The fact Yoshi wants to leave it up to players to decide seems to suggest SE are taking a more diplomatic approach to this in any event.

Don't think we're given a lot of lore on how marriage works, yet, as a ceremony, but we DO have it from Ferne (somewhere...or other...) that there is no bias against homosexuality in Eorzea, so there's that.

Lore-wise, I would assume that it would take place at the altar/temple of Menphina, the Lover. As to how exactly the ritual/ceremony goes, we'll have to see I guess.....What to wear.... O.O

I'd be interested to see how weddings go within certain cultures, such as Seekers of the Sun. Not that I don't think they're applicable to Miqo'te, just how it will be tackled lore-wise. Of course, we have Eorzean culture (a melting point of cultures) as a very valid excuse - adventurers might be turning away from the ways of old to a degree, and starting their own rules with relationships and love.

This could be confronting to traditionalists or the desires of tribes and clans, however.

Based on the bit of lore in the naming threads, I doubt the Seekers or Keepers marry (in a way we think of it), Seekers especially. I mean, there's also the whole bit of lore from the time you were with the U Tribe during the Titan arc; helping the two Tia get some edge against the other in their bids to eventually challenge the Nunh. The females just go with whichever male is strongest and don't really seem to care who exactly he is.

That's exactly why I made my comment I'm curious to see how they consider the variety of lores about culture and naming conventions.

They've already said it will utilize the Sanctum of the Twelve. Also, there's a marriage proposal/planning quest centered around the Sanctum in-game already, revolving around some NPCs.

I think the Keepers of the Moon might engage in a tradition similar to "Walking Marriages" that are practiced exclusively in certain parts of rural China. National Geographic had a segment on it on the show Taboo if you wanna look it up and how they work. But that the culture that does it is fiercely matriarchal.
