Wait, why are we arguing about the name dark matter? Isn't 70% of all FF titles made up of some term that is absolutely alien to the actual definition, or completely created from scratch.

Dark Matter is a fantasy term given to an item responsible for repairing damaged equipment. I believe even in FF9 Dark Matter was an item that served the same purpose.

Dark Matter will be a godsend once materia system is released lol. They made mention of how it would take a few durabilities to get it to 100% for the ability to turn said piece into materia. It's also very likely the gear itself will need to be 100% in order to change form. While at first I can say I was a tad disappointed with the change, if you take the idea as a whole into account the reason for the introduction of dark matter is because of the materia concept that should be in 1.19.

Odds are they will require 100% on gear to change it's form so while at first I did think that perhaps dark matter would lower the cost of repairs, the prices may see an increase as people put up gear they wish to turn into materia. So armor or weapons that offer good materia will cost more to repair cause of the demand to gain that materia. In essence materia itself should be tradeable I think so you create another market of selling materia.

I think don't quote me on being able to sell materia but it would lead to an interesting market. Crafters repair said armor for an amount based on it's demand and in turn the one who obtained and worked on creating the materia sells it based on how much time it took to create said materia and the demand of it. As long as materia offers a wide variety of increases I can see it succeeding, as long as it's more then attribute boost. It would be neat to see materia that enhances abilities and traits as well as overlapping materia where you need a required materia on teh gear first before overlapping it with another one to enhance it's potency.

Materia has a lot of variables as well as a lot of inv clog if it takes up the same inv space so Dark Matter makes even more sense in this context. In a sense materia will replace the old repair items we use to have to hold for our gear. I'm definitely eager to see how materia works out, as of now that's what crafting is missing to make it appealing. Since gear can be obtained through dungeons and even the company system. It takes away from how useful crafting is especially when one can easily repair gear from an NPC. Though once this system is implemented I"m sure it'll make player repairs more useful as well as crafting as a whole. Though I do wonder how cooking will fit into this lol unless the food stat revamp coincides with the materia system introduction.

Honestly, the dark matter makes more sense then the shards / crystals we seem to use for everything for no particular reason. We just sort of like imbuing our building materials with the power of captain planet. Well, everything except the power of heart, as that would just make things very very weird.

On a more serious note, there really isn't anything wrong with dark matter as a repair item as long as they find some way to make it metaphysically fit into the game world some point down the line, which should probably happen once they get to the materia crafting they keep talking about.
