To me, Dark Matter sound more like a rare crafting-end-game material.
Im struggling to wrap my head around why Dark Matter can fix my Fishing Rod.
Im also struggling to think of a replacement as 'Repair Kit' is lame and would be weird to gather that up. (Although logging Dark Matter from trees is also weird.)
    IDK...

Wasnt Dark Matter a really hard to get item in FF9 that served the purpose of creating some weapons?

    That should make ppl understand.

Dark Matter could technically be obtained from anything that has matter, it's just the process in which it's created that is subject to speculation.

I hate the new idea. Maybe I just don't like change or something but the idea that items required different reagents to repair MADE SENSE, like it's realistic that to repair an iron haubergeon you'd need to use iron rings to fix what's broken. I hate this dumbing down of the repair system, personally. I really hope they don't destroy some of the complexity of the crafting system like needing iron rings to make chains to then make chainmail and stuff. I really hope they don't go too far.

It doesn't need to be a generic magical repair all kit. It would be possible and logical to make a single repair kit for each craft, thereby limiting the total number of repair items to 7 (assuming culinarian will never be called upon to repair someone's meal). Logically each kit would be either NPC purchased or crafted by that particular craft, and to appease gatherers, would require at least one item obtainable only from gathering. Also a graded system of repair kits could also be possible, though this would increase the total number of repair items.

An example of several kits and their recipes might be as follows:

Novice Weaver Repair Kit: rank 10 weaver
1 bolt of undyed hempen cloth
1 bolt of undyed cotton cloth
    1 bolt of undyed canvas
1 discarded satchel (obtained through botany)

Intermediate Weaver Repair Kit: rank 30 weaver
1 bolt of undyed velveteen cloth
1 bolt of undyed linen cloth
1 bolt of undyed woolen cloth
    1 discarded satchel

Novice Leatherworker's Repair Kit: rank 10 leatherworking
    1 circle of sheep leather
    1 circle of dodoskin leather
    1 mole sinew cord
    1 antelope sinew cord
1 rusty box (obtained through mining)

Novice Armorer's Repair Kit: rank 10 armorer
    1 bronze square
    1 box of bronze rivets
    1 brass square
    1 box of brass rivets
1 waterlogged crate (obtained through fishing)

This would seem to satisfy just about everything desired in a more streamlined repair system, low numbers of required items, relevant materials, and a boost to gathering utility, without having to resort to a seemingly forced repair-all material.

(I intentionally included all available weaver materials in the 'Novice' and 'Intermediate' repair kits because the cap WILL be raised at some point in the future and there WILL be new materials added, if we start calling everything master level now, then where will we go from there?)

It could still be used as a Rare crafting-end-game material, Dark matter with a different name besides 'Grade x' in front of it.

Repair kit doesn't fit FF at all.

Possibly because no other FF game has ever had a system of durability and repair before.

F*CK people on the forums. Half of these people bitch all the time about sh*t that doesn't need to be changed cause their ornery because this game is blowing a little bit at the moment. The people who b*tch w/out even giving the patch a chance play more FFXIV Forums Beta, than FFXIV online and no one will care if you seriously quit over something being called dark matter.

edit: not mad at people with legitimate problems like "worried about dark matter's effect on the economy"
its just when you nitpick on a game that is already a "fantasy" game in some aspects, its trivial.
