Target filter for NPC... Not so much...

Heyas.. Tried a search to no avail.

When fighting groups of mobs (especially in atma fate grinding) I find it super annoying that I can target NPC's by hitting X (I play on controller). I adjusted the filter settings and turned NPC off with weapon drawn. Still targets them. Turned NPC off with weapon sheathed. Still targets them. Turned off the CLICK filter for NPC targeting. Still targets them. Weapon drawn or sheathed makes no difference. Still targets the dumb NPC char in front of me instead of the mob behind it I'm trying to kill.

As a DPS I have literally no use for NPC targeting in open world content. This is bumming me out. I want it set up to where weapon sheathed = can click on NPC, weapon drawn = I can't. I used the options labeled exactly that and it did nothing. Is this a bug?

The target filtering only works for controlling how your targeting works. In your case, you're just hitting X without targeting anything, so the targeting filter never comes into play. With nothing targeted, X will select a nearby default. Normally, in combat you'd select a target. The X default is more for talking to quest givers in town, which people still want to be able to do even if they don't normally target NPCs.

It's not very intuitive, I'd agree. But you just need to get used to targeting an enemy before attacking it. Use the left/right directional buttons to select the mob you want (making it a soft target) before hitting X (to make it a persistent target). The targeting filters you've configured will control what mobs/players/items/NPCs your directional buttons will cycle through.

i use gamepad on the PS4 as well. and personally disable the filters used for weapon sheathed/drawn. and just use the four custom filters below it. but like previously mentioned this doesn't change anything with the X button.

if you hold, or tap if you use Toggle/Mixed, L2/R2 for the XHB. then you can use L1/R1 to target cycle through enemies only. plus if you L1+d-pad you can target enemies through the enemy list. i forget which d-pad direction it is. left/right or up/down.

and as far as i know the Click Filter settings do nothing. even Square Enix stated sometime ago that those setting do nothing for now. not sure why it's there though.

yeah... targeting for gamepads could use some improvement

Man that's unfortunate... I guess I'll try a go at the advanced ones =/

Thanks tho I really didnt assume filters would only engage after something was targeted to begin with. Thought maybe the click target ones would work but /sadface...

At least we finally got chatlog trans. back.

yeah. i would have assumed the options for Click Filters would apply to the functionality of the X button. but sadly they do absolutely nothing.

at the very least i hope Square Enix could give us the option to change the priority of the X button. it would help immensely.
