I had issues like this with my PS3 when I changed to an old LCD television for a while.

My PS3 problem was that the login screen had the usual background music, but after logging into the game, sound became mute.
Not sure if footsteps could be heard, cuz I always resetted the PS3.
And sometimes the sound would not come back, even after resetting.

But if I pressed the PS button on the controller, the PS3 menu had sounds working normally...

That's when I imagined that probably this game uses different audio modes on different contexts, and for some reason, the PS3 auto-detect audio mode thingy was not working very well, but sometimes it worked... Maybe my TV had its issues too...

What solved me the problem was disabling "Auto detect" sound configurations on PS3 and manually turning off the non-Dolby Surround 3D whatever options that the old TV didn't support.

I'm not sure if you can do this with PS4 or even if that would solve your problem.

Fortunately my PS4 has had no issues like this so far, but I have not used PS4 on the old crazy TV.
