Get a token or get hacked. I know people who didn't want to bother with token. Guess what happened. And guess what is more of a bother than getting a token.
Once your hacked, it's a huge pain to get your account back.

Contacting support is exactly what you need to do if you lose the (physical) token.
This particular FAQ answer on the official SE Support Centre site says:
Usually it would involve providing details about your account like account name, registered game codes, address/registration details etc. Things that would assure them that you are the account holder.I lost my security token.
Please contact the Support Centre.
I keep my token in a drawer in my desk. I never take it outside. It doesn't even move more than 1 foot away from its home. That's how I keep mine safe. Mind, it is starting to get a little fritzy. It can take 2 or 3 presses of the button to turn it on now. I'll likely start using my CE edition version, soon (before it does die on me, because then I'll have to go through the Support route).
On the back of the physical token there is a 10 digit code...make a note of it somewhere so if you lose the token you can ring SE and with that code they will remove the authenticator for you.
