"I've never watched a nuclear explosion myself. That's a couple of degrees of stupid above my limit"- Old Man Harris

As someone has already said, "Dark Matter" really is just a "Repair Kit".
Unfortunately, the Development Team has decided to give the item a name which completely misdescribes its function or purpose.
If they introduced this initially as a Repair Kit that can be purchased from NPCs, it wouldn't be getting nearly as much flack as it is now.
Names are important.
My only complaint is the naming of these items. Couldnt be a little more creative? At the very least you could use physical size as a way to depict grade like:
Grade1: Dust
Grade2: Shard
Grade3: Fragment
Grade4: Nugget
Grade5: Chunk
Or something like that.

Why 5 levels of Dark Matter? Why not White Matter, Yellow Matter, Red Matter etc? Does it matter that they called it Matter? Yes! This isn't Mo-Fo Star Trek.
Did they forget the game is based on crystals? It should have been Cialis Crystal, Viagra Crystal, Extenze Crystal lmao.

Dubont, I think you're overreacting a little. People are not going to buy cotton bolls/thread or mats like velveteen en masse for repair materials. They are buying these things to rank up their crafts. Repair materials (the completed materials, NOT the mats that create them) are a small part of the economy.
Kiote, can you explain how the repair materials are the more prominent?
"I know not what brings men joy. Of what drives them to great deeds, of what legacies they hope to leave, I know less yet. But I do know this: The true hero of this tale was the man forgotten."

All the crafters complaining:
Have you forgotten that you'll soon have a gigantic role in the economy when materia is introduced? Oh no your repair functionality is marginally decreased! But many people will rely on you for the materia socketing. You lose part of one role, you gain another huge one. Quit complaining.

Agreed. Also, you can get the Dark Matter mats by fighting AND gathering. The only crafting class that doesn't benefit from a gathering class (yet) is Leatherworker, so it's a good idea anyways to use a gathering class if you want more materials. And crafters are needed to do repairs! All the crafters complaining:

low level crafters, most likely, won't be able to use the materia system to any extent. High level crafters won't be hurt by this, but the lower ones will. 25k a month doesn't sound very promising..All the crafters complaining:

Healer strike is ridiculously foolish and accomplishes nothing
That figure is pure speculation, though.
Are you telling me that the only way for low level crafters to make money is from selling repair mats and doing repairs themselves?

Crafters can now go around repairing anyone's bazaar items instead of worrying if they have the right mat, which for some classes can get quite creative (chaimois spetch, really?). This is an increase in income potential.
Also, Dark Matter is NPC sold and relatively easy to obtain from what the post suggests. On top of that, the chance to retain the repair mat after repair is being increased - bringing more bang for your buck per dark matter.
All in all, this new system reduces inventory clutter and server load all while increasing repair functionality. On top of that it makes repairs more lucrative for crafters.
For once I kind of felt like I wasn't gonna see people whining about this one... Then I remembered that not everyone likes to read between the lines.
