What is the end game progression for Tanks supposed to be?

I gotta admit, I'm pretty close to despairing of getting a DF clear for anything anymore. As tank I'm pretty helpless to affect whether or not we hit the dps checks or stay alive on Ultima HM, and Garuda Ex seems like more of the same, though keeping the bosses separate and pointed away from the dps is key there.

edit - that is to say, unless I drop the FC I'm in with some RL friends who don't play much, I'm pretty close to giving up on beating any extreme modes. Coil I guess I can work on learning, but that's a lot of runs for not very much upgrade. Also, the idea of farming Brayflox a soul-destroying number of times to get myth for animus is completely out. I'd rather spend my time in CT to get myth after dailies each day.

Have you considered getting your friends to disband the FC and all of you join a new casual friendly FC together?
