Maybe this is what they want, it's clear they need more servers for stuff like housing, and it's very common in MMOs for subs to drop after the new wears off. This could just be a clever trick by SE to get those people that will eventually leave then to go ahead and leave now. This way they don't need to pay for more servers that they won't need in the future, they weed out all the players that will whine and quit if they release solo content that takes more than a couple days to complete, and their numbers stabilize making it easier for them to plan from a business standpoint.

Except that it would be very freaking stupid to sacrifice a lot of subs just for the sake of "server stability". The whole damn idea behind subscription based games is to have the players help pay for the maintenance and upgrades. You don't pay for maintenance costs by alienating the player base.
