equipment upgrade?

I'm a new PS4 player- so I am thinking that the only way to upgrade weapons/ dye armor is if I choose to play a crafting class? Are there no NPC's that do this for a fee? And if I don't want to craft, all of these items/materia/etc is pretty much useless for me?

Most low level gear can be bought on the market board at a very reasonable price. That being said since its your first job going to 50 you will not need to buy much gear. The quest rewards will provide you with level appropriate gear and your main job quest will provide your weapon until level 30.

And about dying gear, there's a lvl15 quest in vesper bay which unlocks it. All you have to do is provide the npc with orange juice

Every area you get to have a Armour merchant that will have white quality gear for your level. This is enough until you start getting dungeon drop upgrades.

As for dye many colors can be purchased from a NPC in the main cities in the market area. Some colors can only be crafted. People will sell these on the market board.

Materia is not sold by NPCs, you have to purchase it from players if you don't want to raise crafting to get it yourself.

As others have said, you can get lots of gear from merchants, the market board, side quests, main scenario quests, and class quests. There's virtually no reason you'd ever really need to buy a piece of gear for your first job, but if you want to there are a few places to do it. Alternatively, you could rely more heavily on dungeon drops and the amrket board. Choosing allagan [metal] pieces for quest rewards is very often a better reward (you just sell them for gil if you didn't already know).

To add to this, Orange juice can be bought from food vendors in all 3 cities' market areas.
