So what does the map link feature do? With map open,. I hit R1 and a flag appears. I was hoping it would set a waypoint that would track on my minimap, but I can't seem to figure out what is does?

Man..been wondering the same thing
the farflasp impernop
The only use I've found for it is showing other party members a spot on a map. Even that is pretty useless, as usually they just follow the map holder to the location (Treasure hunting is the only open world partying I do).
Sadly, it's not as useful as that, and isn't really used too often.
It's more of a way to show someone that isn't in your party a specific point on the map if you aren't actually there to use <pos>.
For example, if someone asks you where a certain mob spawns, you can mark it on the map and drop it into shout or a tell and when they click on it they'll see the flag on their map.
well I do see one difference, it stops your map from scrolling if you leave it open while running around. Not sure if and when you would want to do that, but there it is.
As said above - it's meant to mark a specific spot on the map and then to send the link to it via chat or message (moogle mail).
