Hi there, just need help explaining an abbreviation

I'm a fairly new gamer (been playing FFXIV for nearly a week), having already taken a female character to Archanist Level 15 in the space of time.

Just one thing, what does the FATE abbreviation stand for? I know that it means that the character gets involved in a battle, dependent on their level, indicated by the blue areas on the map (is that right?).

Also, is it possible to take up another class, as well as the initial one, since the start of the game?

    Thanks all

    Welcome!

FATE is an acronym meaning 'Free Active Time Event' - basically it's an open-world battle than anyone can participate in. Usually FATEs involve killing a certain amount of enemies by the time limit, but some FATEs have specific objectives to accomplish, such as escort an npc to a particular area, recover items off the ground and turn them into an npc. FATEs give a lot of exp at the end plus a small amount of gil, Company Seals) once you've joined a Grand Company) and, depending on the FATE, items as well.

As for 'skills', I presume you mean class, in which case you definitely can switch to another class other than your first one. To do so though requires you to go to the Guild of your starting class (in your case, the Arcanist's Guild) and do the three quests the Guildmaster gives you up to one given at level 10. Completing all these quests will unlock the Armoury System which allows you to change classes. You then have to unlock the other classes by going to each Guild and joining up.

Each time you join another guild they will give you the starting weapon or tool for that class, which by equipping it will change your class (for instance, equipping a sword will change your class to Gladiator). Each class has their own set of abilities, statistics and levels, so after unlocking a class that class will start at level 1 though.
