Game characters are not me, so I feel no restriction of gender or any other kind of restriction really. I tend to play female more often but I think that's because I am forced to play a male character in so many video games I like, that it still has a novelty value that I am allowed to play as a female character. I suspect a lot of gamers, both male and female, have a similar reasoning for playing a female character - ie because we can and there's actually an option to not go with the seeming default of male.^^ those.
I have 4 characters on FFXIV - 2 of each gender.

Then I must 'not be playing' a MMO. I NEVER receive whispers of that kind that feminists everywhere think are rampant. And I don't hide the fact that I'm a woman, or trans, or a Chrono Trigger fan. I get lots of whispers about Chrono Trigger I guess. Also, if you knew some of the whispers females get when they play MMOs
There's no real excuses aside from maybe artists or rpers. Everything else is all just plain perversion and people using the generic excuse of "I'd rather stare at a female rear all day" without realizing how the fact they feel compelled to stare at the rear when there's a whole upper back of the body they could direct their eyes at makes them look or you know not feeling so insecure about what people think their sexuality is that they think looking at a male character on the screen is some how going to magically make them appear to be a homosexual because it's nothing more than a bunch of freaking pixels. Then there's the ones that pretend to be girls to take advantage of dumb guys that give them free stuff.

There are plenty of female protagonists these days...
It's just feminist professional perpetual victim outrage as usual.
I don't get this whole thread. All female characters are played by real women, who are just as busty and scantily clad in real life as their characters are in game. Duh. Everyone knows that.
I'm not a feminist, but I have been on the receiving end of some really disturbing advances. Nothing like that on FFXIV or FFXI, but on Aion and TERA multiple times. I'm sure sometimes women make untoward advances on males in MMOs too. However, you're probably never going to meet a guy that says he won't play male characters because women aggressively flirt with him. Congratulations on never receiving unwanted advances, but I assure you that it is a problem sometimes. Just because it never happens to you doesn't mean it never happens.
i play a race/gender because i like the animations/model and how gear looks
i played a taru in FFXI because i like the casting animations , emotes , taru sam WS's look badass , plus tarus grow on u :3... /panic! , i played a cow (big weapon awesome melee animations , zombie (caster animations) , human female (big weapons!) in that other game that doenst mean im a zombie nor a cow IRL (moooooooo / braaaaiiiinsss) , in FFXI 1.0 i started as lala but disliked the new " tarus" , so made a human![]()
i could care less what others play , its their char ^^
Because men have an extremely disappointing selection of customization options.
every time i try to make a male character in an mmorpg, it's kind of like walking into a clothing store as a dude. the selection that women have to choose from is so much more appealing and varied.
which, if my opinion is of any value, means that it is not the message i am trying to send to game makers. i don't care about feminism in video games. games are all about fantasy. whining about someone else's fantasy is like complaining that a homosexual male's erotic dream doesn't have any females in it.If more people play as females it sends the message to developers that players want female protagonists
one of the most reprehensible things i can imagine a game maker doing is implementing a contrived character to appease people whining at them to do it. Why? Because it won't seem authentic. They might not make a good impression with it. It will feel like it is just there because a bunch of dudes had to give the ladies a win in this department.
i would appreciate better customization options for males. all the highlander hyur faces look like crap. a lot of the facial hair options are just plain bad.
