Better that than older dungeons becoming a zero-player game. Does the content still exist if no one does it?

I am fine with a leaderboard for bragging rights. But I think they would have to remove the loot table.
As I understand, they have (roughly) separate server hardware for different instances and those servers are allocated based on usage patterns, hence why they had to increase the number of servers dedicated to AK way back in the speedrunning days. For older dungeons, fewer people are going to run it at the same time so it shouldn't be a large burden on those servers to run a few extra solo instances.

Not really, the option to play with others is still available in-game.
