    Disciplines of the hand/land question

So I'm completely new to the game, have a 17 marauder and a 11 paladin, probably going to stick with the paladin as my first max level class, but I'm wondering, is it worth it to take time away from leveling my main class in order to level up say mining/armorer or say botanist/alchemist?

The idea of making my own armor as I level sounds nice and I've heard it'll make stuff better than the quest rewards, and the idea of making myself health potions is very appealing given that I'm a tank

So my question is, being new, and not having any class maxed yet, is it worth it to take the time to level some of the crafting disciplines? Are the benefits while leveling worth the time?

I've done googling and have seen mixed answers, though the answers could be out of date, hence why I'm asking for an opinion on the current state of the game

    Thanks for any info/tips

Honestly, you'll be rewarded with gear as you go through dungeons and complete quests as you're going through the main story on your first class. The time and money investment for a first time player may not necessarily be worth it for you to set aside time to craft and gather, but if that's something that interests you don't let me be the one to stop you.

I would say it depends on if you actually enjoy crafting/gathering. I do, and if you're like me, I say go for it! As a PLD main, go with your first idea, miner/armorer. Potions have a long cooldown after use, and are not a viable source of healing, so don't worry about Alchemy for now.

Crafted, high-quality gear is almost always better than an equivalent level dungeon drop, simply because they can be melded. So if you're into min/maxing even at low levels, then be sure to HQ all the gear you plan on wearing!

Edit: What the poster above me said is very true. For your first class, you can probably get by just using the NQ quest reward gear. But being a PLD, your gear is more noticeable than the other classes, and having full HQ gear compared to full NQ gear is a big difference in stats.

Edit 2: Nevermind what I just wrote. Dont take the gear rewards as your quest reward unless you absolutely have to upgrade that slot. Always take the allagan coin rewards. This is 200-250k gil by the time you reach level 50.

Roger that, thanks to both of you for the REALLY quick replies!
In other mmo's I've always rushed to max level. Almost felt pressured to. But on here I don't feel that kind of pressure for some reason. It's a lot more peaceful. Totally different atmosphere. I think I will take my time and enjoy myself and level mining/armorer after I hit 20 and get a mount(20 is the level you get a mount right?).

I know what you mean about not feeling rushed in this game, however I can't pinpoint why I feel this way. Maybe because of how easy it is to level, maybe because I'm in a great FC that encourages stopping to smell the roses. Or maybe because I'm older now, and do what I want, not what others want me to do. Whatever the case may be, I'm extremely happy with this game!

And yes, you get a mount at 20. I recommend leveling your PLD with your MIN/ARM. Doing levequests helps immensely in leveling up DoH and DoL classes, but you need an appropriate level DoW/M to unlock the leves at each location. Its every 5 levels, so 20, 25, 30 etc.

    20&25 leves: Quarrymill
    30: Costa Del Sol
35: That place with the really long name with big words in the south of Coerthas.
    40: Whitebrim (Western Coerthas)
45: The town east of Revenant's Toll (Mor Dhona)

You have to do 1 quest at each of these places to unlock the abilities to do levequests there, and that 1 quest requires a battle class.

Levelling crafts or gathering jobs without leves is doable, but it's quite the grind.

Quick question regarding that quote, what does HQ'ing mean? Is that like sticking it in the bank/storage area to save for later? Sorry, still learning all the terminology in this game. Thanks soooo much for the information. Got this thread bookmarked to use as a reference tool <3

    HQ = high quality

High quality gear is tougher to make but has better stats.

    Haha HQ= High Quality.

Every bit of crafted gear can be high quality, with the right moves.

The game does a good job of teaching you what's what. You'll get it more once you actually start crafting. As a note, you can't HQ any gear until you have a level 5 DoH (doesnt take long at all). You get your first "Touch" ability at level 5, and it's these touches that increase quality.

Just a small note, but if you're looking to HQ gear you'll want to level all the crafts for cross-class abilities, and likely the other two DoL as well to get ingredients. Another reason is that all DoH/DoL gear below 50 can be worn by all classes, so they can share gear.
