    PS4 Disc Requirement

It's not really a UI thing, but this seemed to be the most appropriate place to put this. It's a very minor issue anyway - more a curiosity than anything, really.

Why is it that the retail PS3 version doesn't require the disc in the drive but the retail PS4 version does? I didn't use the free upgrade because I wanted to retain the right to play on PS3, so I bought the retail PS4 version and I noticed this. It was kind of nice having FFXIV just on the XMB ready to play at any time and while it's no real bother to put the disc in, it would be nice if I didn't have to.

The disc is required if you upgrade from PS3 to PS4? I guess I do not understand. I have the retail copy that came on a disc as well (first time user, I did not play on PS3 or PC) and the disc is not required. In fact I have never put the disc into my PS4 at all.

I downloaded the Beta Phase 2 client then bought the full game. Entered my code from the mox and have never needed to use the CD for anything?

A lot of people downloaded the game rather than getting a disc, so they certainly don't need a disc in while playing. It'd be weird to require it only for the subset of players who had a disc in the first place. Was it some sort of installation option, where if you have a disc you don't need to install the full game to your harddrive? That's the only thing I can think of. Some games allow either a full install to harddrive (then no longer needing the disc) or partially playing from disc (so you save some space on your harddrive). That was more common a few years back, though, when harddrive space was more limited and expensive.

I don't think you understand, but I do, as I'm having the same thing. It's like this.

    >have PS3 disc version
    >install
    >can play without disc

    >have PS4 disc version
    >install
    >need disc to play

Isn't anything to do with using the PS3>PS4 upgrade feature.

But I did the same as OP. I preordered the PS3 CE way before release, was in beta for months, got the early access code, and when the disc arrived, I installed it, took the disc out, and I have not needed to put the disc in the PS3 to play it since.

However, my PS3 is in my bedroom and the PS4 is in the living room, and I use both systems, so I bought the regular PS4 disc version last week. I put the disc in, installed it, but the PS4 requires the disc to play.

Why does the PS3 allow you to play without the disc once it's installed, but the PS4 requires the disc to play?

it's a PS4 authentication feature. to the best of my knowledge, there is no way around it.

A bit late for this now but you could have saved yourself both hassle and money by upgrading PS3 -> PS4 and then purchasing another (much cheaper) PS3 copy of the game. Unfortunately - there is not much you can do about that now. You can try to uninstall game and downloading it from PSN store instead but I'm not sure if that would help or not.

There's a way around it for some players. Those who downloaded the game and have never had a disc are able to play it without a disc. It shouldn't require one for some players but not others.

right. but it's a Blu-Ray disc authentication feature. which is why it doesn't occur with digital copies. to my knowledge every disc based game on the PS4 will require this authentication. i suppose to help cut back on piracy. on the PS3 you had to jailbreak the system to play burnt games. and use out-dated firmware. i would imagine someone somewhere would figure out a bypass. but it may be hard coded in to a processing chip. in which case there shouldn't be any way around it. no easy way at least. only an expert or pro could bypass this, most likely.

Someone recommended this to me, but I'm an avid FF collector (hell, my kids are named Zack and Elena...) and I wanted a physical PS4 copy, as it has much better case artwork.

In fact, had the PS4 CE items not been available to PS3 CE owners, I'd have bought a second CE just for them.

    Yeah, I know... ¬_¬
