Learn skills from Weapons and Armor

When I first learned that the way you change classes in this game was through equipping different weapons, I was hopeful that they were going to implement a skill acquisition system such as the one used in Final Fantasy IX. For those of you not familiar with the skill acquisition system that I am referencing, in several Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy IX is the first that comes to mind, the way that you learned skills, abilities, and spells was through finding and equipping different pieces of armor and weapons. For instance, if you were a White Mage and wanted to learn the Cure spell, you would need to locate and equip a Cure Rod. While the Cure Rod was equipped, you would have the ability to use the Cure Spell. In order to use the Cure spell permanently and without the need to equip the Cure Rod, you would have to earn a certain amount of SP while the Cure Rod was equipped. Once you obtained say 200 SP while the Cure Rod was equipped, Cure would be permanently added to your White Mage repertoire. Furthermore, once you learn Cure from the Cure Rod, you would normally still retain a benefit from keeping the Cure Rod equipped because it would add some further benefit (i.e. as long as the Cure Rod was equipped, your Cure Spell costs a few less MP). I believe this would be perfectly implemented in an MMO because it would give the player a reason to find and equip every piece of armor and weapons in the game. As long as they kept in place level restrictions for when a player can equip different armors and weapons, this would make sure characters advance in skills and spells at a controlled rate. Furthermore, they could reward players who complete extra difficult quests by giving them a piece of armor or a weapon that allows a character the ability to use a spell or skill a few levels earlier than normal (i.e. After completing an exceptionally difficult quest, a player is awarded a Rod of Wonder which allows their White Mage to learn Cure 2 several levels before they would find the normal Cure 2 Rod). I personally would love this system to be implemented, but I want to here what you have to say. Please let me know what your opinion is.

I've considered this idea before and I think it would be a good idea, not as a replacement for the current system, but as an additional way to learn miscellaneous skills along your journey. I think it would be a novel and entertaining augment to the current system.

I am definately on board for this idea. What comes to my mind is the Paladin shield from FFVI and Imp gear.

As mentioned, I feel this kind of system should be placed ONTOP of the current system, instead of replacing.

Yes, indeed. It's a nice way of adding content and new and interesting ways to improve your character's abilities.

Yes, it was very rewarding and is in my opinion a fun way to collect spells and abilities.

But even though i want this, is do see problems in the future when more gear is added. You might end up with hundreds of spells in the same class, if they keep on adding gear and equipment, and that sounds already very confusing after a year or so. I mean don't we end up with getting the same ability when the only difference is that it has a different name?

As awesome as a system that is it makes it for a market of assholes, because any ability worth its guff, for example: Raise, would be a 10 million gil item. Good in one player not so much in MMO

I assume this guys is talking about the skill system present in FFIX? I wouldn't really mind something like that but, yeah, it would totally play hell on the market.

It was present in FFTA/A2 as well. You'd equip an item, use it for (x) time/battles and you'd get the skill from it. The only problem with the original system, in regards to FFXIV, is that one weapon could teach multiple classes different skills. Obviously it's an easy tweak but just something to consider.

I think it's fine if it doesn't replace the current system. Kind of like, you get these skills 1-50 just leveling and then these other skills are special and require a little more work.

Edit: Also it wouldn't be too bad on the market with the heavy influence on crafting in this game. I mean I'm in a decent sized LS and we've got crafters for most everything so if someone needs something made it can get done in a few days usually. Exceptions obviously being the real high end stuff like Silver Tricorne, 50 weapons, etc...

If its done it should only be for legendary weapons that give you special weapon skills like on FFXI, Ala Excalibur and Knights of the Round Ect. Nothing that can be sold.
