Which job type is more populated between the 2?
I would say it is about even between the 2 but both those classes have less people playing them, there will always be way more DPS than healers and tanks.
It is particularly hard to measure because players can have multiple classes (or all of them) so it is not just a question of what exists but what people are using most.
In general you can get an idea which type is most in demand at the moment by looking at who the roulette bonus is for in the duty finder. It has traditionally been tanks but for the last week or so it's been healer (as I've seen). I think a lot of new players are playing tanks because of the increased rewards/goodies for tanking.
True, but I also think it has to do with the server and or what people like the most. It really is hard to tell what is used more in a MMO especially since the population is always ever changing and people changing classes throughout the game.It is particularly hard to measure because players can have multiple classes (or all of them) so it is not just a question of what exists but what people are using most.

On Jenova it has been a even mix on the roulette bonus. I have been running randoms on my healer whenever the bonus for healer pops up to level up, I prefer this over quests.
I think that a lot of tanks also play secondary healers on account of there being a CNJ requirement for the PLD job. Originally I was going to focus on one class, and one job, but wound up leveling my CNJ and ARC to have a secondary WHM as well. I also think that a lot of tanks may, like me, find the change of pace between healing and tanking to be quite refreshing. Tanking is super stressful compared to healing, at least in the formative levels (1 - 35). Also, having the versatility is probably on the mind of tanks as they become more seasoned. It is particularly hard to measure because players can have multiple classes (or all of them) so it is not just a question of what exists but what people are using most.

On the point of why new players are picking tanks, I'm not sure I agree with the basis of increased rewards. New players aren't likely to know any of that when they start. It's probably based more on the fact that in RPGs the soldier/warrior/tank role is traditionally the most balanced, and played off as being the best starter to wrap your head around mechanics. MMORPGs differ slightly from traditional RPGs, but the point still stands.
There are more healers then tanks in the game. Tanks have always been the most in demand in this game.
as a healer since august i've never had instant que times, until 2.2
so there must've been an influx of tanks from somewhere as you don't wait around for hours on end anymore
but, they probably still are the minority by a little bit
