never even thought of tanks going at the bottom of the partylist, have to give that a whirl, mines usually me>tank>tank>dps>other healer, not really optimal i guess

also i find if i need to cast on myself i just unselect everyone and cast the spell, pressing circle being faster than scrolling through the partylist

This is similar to the set up I use while healing, although I have /assisttarget set to L3 and normally just set focus target by clicking the square button and selecting it in order to take up less space on my hotbars. My Party set up is normally other healer>(main) tank> (off) tank>brd (if applicable)>everyone else. I'd play about with party set ups and see which works best for you.

Selecting players in your party can be done easily enough with the up/down controller buttons, and who gets selected by the left/right controller buttons is configurable. If you're healing someplace like a big FATE where you want to heal players who are NOT in your party, then just switch your left/right buttons to selecting players. Then when you're doing DPS, switch those left/right buttons to selecting enemies. I have my PS3 set up to use L1+square to put me in "Enemies" targeting mode, L1+circle to put me in "Friends" mode, and L1+triangle to put me in "All" mode. (That's configured in the Targeting section of Character Settings.) That way you can easily switch your targeting mode around according to what you want to do at the time.

Woah! I didn't know you could set assist to L3?? Will look into that as it'd save a slot on each of my battle cross-hotbars *_*

With the focus target thing, I don't waste a slot because I use the macro's in pace of the standard skill icons, rather than both a macroed and non macroed version of each skill slotted. I never don't want to make the target's target my focus target, but for some players that could be undesirable I guess.

In fact I'd really like to see other people's cross-hotbar setup's, as that can become an artform of it's own XD. I'll get some screenshots of my own and post here or start a new thread and pop a link to it here.

I would just Focus Target by selecting the enemy, hitting Square or its equivalent on your controller, and selecting it from the popup menu. Focus Target is very rarely a necessity.

As far as L3 goes, you may not want to change it depending on what other jobs you have interest in. A large amount of MNK's damage is from auto-attacks so I usually use the L3 Lockon while repositioning for combos so that my auto-attacks continue while doing it.

Thanks for the head's up Estellios. I don't play melee damage at all currently, but will bear it in mind.

When I first set up a macro to replace the standard damage skills, it was simply to emulate the auto target forwarding that other MMO's have as an option in settings (i'm sure this one will eventually).

However I found in the heat of battle I couldn't remember if I'd cast that Aero or not, and due to the fact you have to add a slight delay between switching cleric stance and hitting Areo, I was never convinced whether it went through. So when I found out that focus target get's a mini status bar including up to 5 status effects, I added it into the macro to make the targets target my focus target automatically. The macro I use on all damage skills is:

So really I'm not using the focus target as intended but instead to see whether the status effects (mainly my aoe's, virus) are up on the target I'm targeting through the tank. I find this means less target switching making adding virus or stance dancing much easier without needing to change targets at all.

As mentioned a few posts up, I've now posted a new thread exploring Cross-hotbar slotting. Hope you'll find it interesting and post your thought's / own chotbar screens.

It takes at least 2x as many trigger pulls to effectively target party members as it does enemies.

As main tank vs Garuda EX, for the entire fight you will have to switch targets perhaps a dozen times between Garuda, Spiney Plume, and Suparna. And they are easy switches, because you never have to deactivate your XHotbar to use L1/R1 to cycle thru enemies. Same Goes for off tank, with perhaps double the target switches. Simple inputs.

As a healer, on the other hand, vs Garuda EX, every time a player takes damage to switch to that player you must deactivate your current active XHotbar, up/dn to the injured player, reactivate, and cast. This, x8 players (as opposed to 3 enemies) takes a lot of careful management of your trigger pulls (activating/deactivating) and selecting party members (up/dn).

Additional thoughts on the subject here:

    Thanks! I didn't know this!

To the OP: There's a video of a scholar solo healing T9 using a controller. I'm sure you'll have no issue in whatever role you want to play.
