Some parts of XI were specifically being created with XIV in mind, like Abyssea and the crystals you had to go to are aetherytes and such. Guildleves are FOV mixed with the flexibilty of MMM. These aren't stretches. I think it isn't because FFXI had concepts from XIV tested on them, I think this game failed because their main market was always gonna be those niche gamers and they alienated them.

Another popular thing i see from usual MMO gamers is the infamous: "If i wanted to play WoW, then i'd play WoW", anytime another MMO tries to copy/paste too much. The same is true with FF14 & FF11.
IDK about you, but virtually no one i knew in FF11 moved over to FF14, lol.

The games has thus far failed to attract large numbers of players because they built it around stopping RMT rather than making an enjoyable gaming experience. Every single system in place at launch seemed to be designed to do nothing but slow people down.
