First of all let me apologize about the spelling errors due to English is not my native language. I am a common player in FFXIV and FFXI. The reason I write this letter is only to share with you an idea that cannot get out of my head. I am aware of efforts being made by dev team to improve FFXIV and i would like to show my ideas that have been formed with the passage of sleepless nights. It seems possible that this topic could be repeated at first, but I hope that once read in full, you can see the differences.

i did a word document with further information about all this: https://viewer.zoho.com/docs/ueccbh

First thought different ways to implement a Card game into FFXIV:
  1. As a mini-game accessible for all players at any time
  2. As part of a new class called Gambler
    1. Only Gamblers can play the game.
    2. You can use Gambler Trait that allow you to play this card game
  3. As a game against some NPC only

Personally I prefer the option 2b but only playing as Gambler give you exp. Triple Triad seems to be the system that attracts more players who already know this kind of games, but in my view is too simple. Here an example of something like triple triad, but more complex:

The first difference would be the board. 4x4 I think a better size to make the games a little long and interesting. Second difference would be to use different values for attack and defense. Also a bit more complicated element modifiers and type of attack/defense (discussed later) and finally, allow the same kind of card do not always have the same values (recall the items of Diablo II). I like to think it would be possible to play not only individually but as a team, forming partys, so that you can see 2vs2 and 3vs3 battles. For this, the board should be able to vary the size of 4x4 cells (1vs1, 2vs2) to 6x4 squares (3vs3 widescreen panel.). In the end, something mixed from Triple Triad – Magic - Diablo.

1vs1 -> 4x4 -> 8 Cards per Player.
2vs2 -> 4x4 -> 4 Cards per Player.
3vs3 -> 6x4 -> 4 Cards per Player.

For example: 1vs1 -> 5x4 -> 8 Cards per Player -> 4 cells blocked (unusable). This requires more Strategy to use certain cells.

With a ladder system based in points earned or lost this could be very funny and probably lots of people will come only to play this.

Cards:

Working a bit in an image editor, I made an example of how it could be a card.

The type of cards you can use is limited by a variable range. For example, a Gambler between levels 1 and 10 can only use cards from rank 1, from 11 to 20 Cards from Ranks 1 and 2, etc.

Defense and Attack:

Each card has a value of attack and defense in each of the cardinal points. Attacks can vary for different reasons, types of defense and attack, attack and defense elements or activation of some skill.

Defense Types: Normal, Light, Medium, Hard, Magic.
Attack Types: Normal, Piercing, Bludgeon, Slashing, Magic.

Modifiers: Attack -> Defense -> Bonus

Piercing -> Normal -> +Rank*1
Piercing -> Light -> +Rank*1
Piercing -> Medium -> 0
Piercing -> Hard -> -Rank*1
Piercing -> Magic -> -Rank*1

Normal -> Normal -> 0
Normal -> Light -> -Rank*1
Normal -> Medium -> -Rank*1
Normal -> Hard -> -Rank*1
Normal -> Magic -> +Rank*1

Bludgeon -> Normal -> +Rank*1
Bludgeon -> Light -> 0
Bludgeon -> Medium -> -Rank*1
Bludgeon -> Hard -> +Rank*1
Bludgeon -> Magic -> -Rank*1

Slashing -> Normal -> +Rank*1
Slashing -> Light -> -Rank*1
Slashing -> Medium -> +Rank*1
Slashing -> Hard -> 0
Slashing -> Magic -> -Rank*1

Magic -> Normal -> -Rank*1
Magic -> Light -> +Rank*1
Magic -> Medium -> +Rank*1
Magic -> Hard -> +Rank*1
Magic -> Magic -> 0

A rank 1 Card with Piercing attack of 10 to a light defense of 11 will have +1 to attack (+Rank*1) and win.
A rank 5 Card with Magic attack of 43 to a Hard defense of 48 will have +5 to attack (+rank*1) and win.
A rank 4 Card with Slashing attack of 36 to a light defense of 34 will have -4 to attack (-rank*1) and lose.

Note: Modifiers are just experimental, I don’t know about game balance but I think must be based on Ranks to have lineal bonuses vs Cards values.
