Playing on PS4- is it really better to get a USB keyboard?

To the OP,

Keyboard is well worth a purchase just for chatting and navigation. The PS4 should recognise any USB keyboard and mouse. I use a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse setup and it works great.

At the end of the day the investment wont just be for your PS4 or this game, you can use it on your smart TV, PC, PS4 web browsing etc. so will be worth the purchase.

I've just made the port from PC to PS4, I'm not even gonna bother trying to use the controller, I just started using my keyboard and mouse straight away, much easier for typing and skill rotation (IMO).

As everyone else has stated, yes, get a keyboard. FC mates of mine who do not have a keyboard hooked up to their playstation really suffer trying to pick out each letter on the screen with the controller. :/ In my FC too, if a member does not interact with anyone else in chat, they stay in the lowest, most restricted rank. :/

I will add though that the wireless usb keyboard I'd used with my ps3 is spazzing out with my ps4. No idea why. I replaced the batteries just in case but sometimes it is sluggish and then duplicates letters. :/

So I just started two days ago, got up to level 10 as an Arcanist and have yet to start doing dungeons. My plan to deal with communication in the dungeons is to set up macros, and probably end up spamming the "I'm new, playing on PS4 and don't have a keyboard" macro.
I've seen it recommended that getting a USB keyboard is a good idea. I have a few questions about that. Firstly, I don't type particularly well to begin with so I wonder if it will be any better. Secondly, do I have to switch the overall control scheme to keyboard or keyboard and mouse to use the keyboard for chat inputs? Thirdly, how much chatting is really going on in dungeons? It seems, from my limited WOW experience, that most people kind of just know what to do and the chat is minimal.

till the end 11 and 14 dye your going to get mixed feelings.but let me say this play 11 or 14 and try to write back to a friend it can be done but by the time you do it they have moved on to a new topic or what you say wont fit with what is going on or your dead now thanks to not knowing what the mages or the pld or even your own party are doing.Yes i would say go with a usb or even both a usb key board and mouse or even just have them so if you want to use them.or if your on a ps4 get both in blue tooth.but this is what it comes down to do you want it.

For anyone looking for circumvent a good portion of typing, Thumb Knights of Behemoth server are looking for members. We are a PS4 only FC that utalizes the PSN voice chat. of course you can't avoid a little typing, especially for macro's i've got some lengthy ones that i've tried to do with the controller and got very frustrated.

I DO have a Nexus 7 and the PS app- I'll give that a try, too. I hadn't thought about the fact that it has a keyboard! Thanks!

UPDATE:
So I used the PS app on my nexus 7 and it does work as a keyboard, but if you're not using it heavily the connection will time out after a couple of minutes. It'll do in a bind but I went ahead and ordered a regular ol' USB keyboard. If I get it on time I'll be trying it out tomorrow.

Yes! I have the same problem haha. I want to say thanks to those that heal me, but it isn't fun without a keyboard lol

Hey, the macros aren't too bad for stuff like thanking healers- it takes a little practice to call up macros on the crossbar, select it, then pick your message- definitely not as fast as a keyboard, but still faster than the virtual keyboard. I turned up doing a couple of custom macros, such as, "Playing on PS4, no keyboard," and it's getting me by, at least for casual conversations.

I did order a USB keyboard, though. Waiting to get it in the mail.

In case you're interested, I have one of THESE and they're damn useful. No wires, and easy to set up.

Still prefer my PS3 official keypad though, but hey.
