When I see people calling another elitist, I usually assume that it's someone who knows their stuff but are seriously rude about it. They think they are above anyone who doesn't meet their standard. They forgot they were once noobs themselves. If it's your first time in a dungeon, they will leave, even if you've watched/read a guide. Noobs just aren't worth their time.

the order goes something like this

GODS, ( people who beat content on their own and make youtube guides for all those losers below )
Elitists , (the people who quickly read those guides and beat the content )
Good players, (the people who can dodge who elitists will tolerate carrying though fights )
    scrubs, everything else

    have a nice day
So, if I beat content on my own, before a guide or without using a guide, without posting a guide(because I adapt and learn fights really fast. But I dont believe in my skill in informing people of how to do things,( I.E. I doubt my skill at making guides.) and I help out people when I can. can I be a demi God?

Elitists have to be part of an actual elite. It goes beyond just being good or skilled but I always felt it refers to players who are in a class of their own pushing content immediately and getting it on farm status very quickly. Duty finder all-stars aren't what I'd call elite.

It's kind of funny to listen to people's opinions on this though, since I imagine every dickhead who fumbles his way through duty finder groups thinks he's one of the few proud elite.

edit: I mean it also is used as a pejorative for players ranging from people who politely expect competence all the way to crazy rage quitters who have undeserved egos. However when I think of it like "that guy is elite" I think of what I typed out above.

First off, I specifically wrote "an absurd and unnecessarily high item level requirement".

Second, Are you telling me that if an i95 makes a party for i95 to farm something silly like ifrit normal, that's not elitist? You are practically saying that anyone who doesn't meet that criteria is not good enough to be in your party. As a matter of fact, you are literally saying "you have to be at my level or better".

You don't need an i95 to do ifrit normal, but you chose to discriminate against people who aren't i95 because you feel they aren't good enough. And my definition of elitist is someone who doesn't want to play with people who are not at their level.

But then again...this is a thread about the subjective usage of the word elitist...

Doesn't matter how easy the dungeon is. Maybe a quest calls for that dungeon to be cleared many times and they want the runs to be as fast as possible? Still nothing wrong with that.

Elitists work two jobs, babysit at home, drive sports cars, date models and have a PHD in physics from Harvard and still manage to make raid times.

If they ever say otherwise, it's because they are super modest and humble as well. Upstanding citizens those elitists.

Utterly incorrect. An elitist is almost by definition not part of the Elite. An elite group *is* elite because they are actually the best at something, otherwise they could not be elite. An Elitist is someone who sets themself above others regardless of their own actual or apparent skill. An elitist not only makes a distinction between varying levels of skill (or whatever) but they also discriminate based on that. The elitist will discriminate against others placing themself above others on whatever basis for discrimination they have chose as the basis for their elitist attitude.

An elitist does not need to be an elite player or elite in any way at all to be elitist. Yiou could be the worst player in the game, but gil from RMTs, purchase BiS gear and runs through various content with that gil to obtain all the shinies, and be the most elitist jerk on the server. In fact you'd have to be one of the more elitist people if you did that since you'd need to surround yourself with over geared people in order to do anything without purchasing a carry.

It means the idea that there is a group of people, an "elite class" that has either the natural aptitude or simply superior training/education, who should be the ones who rule/govern/etc. In MMOs it's used to refer to players who are at the "top" of the game due to either natural skill or practice, telling others what they should do within the game because they have reached the highest tiers of success/ability/whatever themselves. Like all popular terms on the Internet, past a certain point people just start applying it to anything and everything they don't like because it has a negative connotation.
Pretty good summary. I was just going to say someone who thinks they are better than the person playing alongside of them, when both are good. I think your explanation is top notch which puts you in a different class than I. Are you elite? Lol kidding!

Elite and elitist are very different concepts. The elite are simply the best of the best. Elitists are those who think they are hot shit, and treat everyone else like dirt. The elitist is commonly found tossing out demeaning one-liners to new /lesser skilled or perhaps they skip the chit chat and just initiate a vote kick if they don't want to deal with the undesirable.
