I think there needs to be a bit of a clarification, though I think this has been said before...
An "Elite" Player; Generally no one has used this term since the early 2000's, but they are generally good at the game, make guides, and such. They can be insular and exclusionary when new progression content is released, but once they've cleared it, tend to open up their ranks and will allow in or even rotate newer players through. Typically gun for world first...etc.
An "Elitist" Player; this term is used more often these days, but is negative. Typically, rude and hold other players to a standard they themselves don't meet, or way to high that even some of the players that beat them out for world first couldn't reach it. Often far less skilled than their boasts would lead one to believe. and typically blame anyone/anything that can't or won't fight back, but never themselves for mistakes that are demonstrably their own fault.
It's all about attitude in the end, "Elite" Players have good attitudes and manners and obvious skill in the game, "Elitist" Players, seemed to have been raised by particularly unfriendly wolves, and have the gaming skills of a newborn harp seal.
