that's only because they created diversity in the gears. That way you can have healing books (mind only) which the arcanist (dps) wouldn't have any benefits using, and dps books for smn/acn.
considering that, new jobs will have to equip the same type of weapon than the main class. Thus, gladiators won't suddenly use 2 blades, nor will warriors use dual axes.
That said, some jobs can be really interesting, as :
lancer => templar. Tank using magical buffs (@Gormogon : elemental breath are drg related though, not templar)
archer => ranger. Obviously dps. Just because bard really need to be a real support so that people stop their epeen contest and do their job
thm => time mage. Though I don't know how demi and quarter would work, time mages have to support skills as well
thm => illusionist. that would make a second dps out of thm though, but heavily AoE based (almost only that)
cnj => Green mage, support
pug => dancer, support (though I'd love them to use clothes as weapon again ^^). It might come from rogue instead for double knives use.
as for new classes :
my guess on dagger class is rogue so :
=> ninja, either dps or support. Though their veils might be hard to implement in FFxiv. So more of a dps than a support
=> dancer, for dual daggers, support
=> some said thief too, though I don't know how it would work, because there isn't anything to steal in FFxiv.
new class : gunner
=> musketeer, dps
=> chemist, healer
=> orator, support
new class : fencer
=> red mage, hybrid (I will come back on RDM later)
=> geomancer, dps or support
***************
3rd jobs.
Yoshida said they would eventually come, maybe after one or two expansions. They would require more than one job lv30 and an other lv15, more like 2 jobs lv50 which would allow the access to a special npc unlocking the new job. His example of that was the red mage using WHM and BLM at level 50
My guess would be that 3rd jobs would be reachable by a new type of crystal allowing new equipments to be usable.
As for red mage, equiping the crystal as either a cnj or a thm would allow you to wear whatever which job-specific weapon they come with (most probably a rapier). So at level 50, you can get a staff and/or a rod which rdm can equip as well (the only one, a vendor should have it in case you "lose" your rapier and need to reequip with the staff/rod), and after that you'd have only rapiers.
3rd job possibilities
WHM + BLM : Red Mage
PLD + BLM : dark knight
(little note : stop the nonsense, do not make a ninja evade-type tank. Such tanks are horrible in every MMO, either utterly useless or totally cheated)
they said non expected though, so it won't be musketeer as everyone expect them to come since 1.0. I'm also curious what in "dagger class" made you think about red mage.
