Being a avid crafter, I have had this question many times with friends that have experience with my new craft. Unfortunately, though some items stay in demand/high valued, not always are they worth the time to make compared to other easier and faster crafts with a lower profit margin.

The first thing to making money, is make sure to farm/craft your mats yourself. When you buy your materials, though it will be faster, it'll lower your profits (if any). Then pay attention to the Market Board (MB), it'll be a very big factor to your decision making. Sometimes a pair of crafters gloves is worth more than a spool of thread and easy to make. SO you can not only level Botanist, but also craft the mats into threads and gear for others to maximize the profit.

Botanist has a lot of uses for Cooking and Weaving, so pay attention to the indemand items for your level (if your not wanting to craft), so that you know what sells the most and has the highest profit margin.

Well I started up Weaver last night, and went and farmed Moko Grass to start making things myself! Now if I could just learn to use macros when crafting, I'm sure this process would be perfect for me! lol

This isn't always true. Think of it this way. If, instead of crafting, you turned around and sold those ingredients you gathered, wouldn't that be a profit right there? You can either spend 1000 gil buying ingredients, or farm up 1000 gil worth of ingredients and, by using them in a craft, miss out on the profit of selling them. The cost of the ingredients really becomes a moot point in the equation. Ingredients are not "free" just because you gathered them yourself. They very much have value! Once you can afford to, it really is more efficient to buy everything you need.

Gathering ingredients also takes time, time that could be spent crafting a salable item. I find it can be more lucrative to buy ingredients and craft up my marketable items quickly, while there's demand, than to spend a couple hours farming/gathering and possibly return to see that crafted item is now flooding the market.
