There are dragons in Final Fantasy XIV. And dragons can fly.
But Ishgard is at war with them, and so is the Garlean Empire apparently, so I don't see much hope for us being able to ride them.
Arabian camel cavalry.I wouldn't be surprised in the least to only see Chocobos as the mounts for FFXIV. Referencing real life, like fantasies often do to an extreme (like riding a chicken for instance), there's only one real mount in the world - horses. Sure, you can probably ride on other things, like a bull, a dog, a cat, tried a mouse once but ... nevermind ... point is horses are the only reliable "real life mount" and Chocobos are already in the game anyway, and seen as mounts, so why not have them be the only reliable mount as well? Not to mention that having one mount just recolored (when breeding starts) makes it a lot easier on the dev team as well, and I'm sure they like easy work from time to time.
But ... I wouldn't mind riding on Ifrit's head, or even Bahamut o.o ... well, a wyvern mount anyway would be cool heh.
Indian elephant cavalry.
Huskie sleds.
Reliable mounts, they were even used close to modern times, outperforming the horse in various environments. Alexander's army wanted to go home partly because of rumors of the number of elephant troops in India! Hell, even modern military cavalry doesn't mainly use the horse!
You want fantasy? Try Warg riders, Dragon fleets, Turtle rafts, and Polar Bear mounts!
