My birthday was yesterday and I bought FF14. I had a chance to play before and didn't. I've seen the opening recap, but I'm still feeling "detached".

There've been events and a bunch of patches before/after ARR came out. I don't know what those were, never took part and this makes me feel regret that I'll never live parts of the game's history. Are any of the events from before and after ARR's launch that will be repeated this year or after?

I was hoping maybe someone could have a sit down somewhere cozy with me and other new arrivals. Have a few drinks with story time. Try and "experience" what we missed, through someone's retelling. So we can move on and enjoy the future with others.

Forgive me. I know this is a really weird thread. But I'm a lore junkie and the one thing I've always had trouble with in MMOs is if I'm "late". I'm not after street cred or anything. Just the fun and the memories.

I never played the 1.xx version started at ARR.
I looked on youtube all the story quests for 1.xx until the end.

In ARR either you are and old adventurer that did the 5 years "time jump" or you are just a new one.
Events that happened in 1.xx are not hindering anything in ARR.

As for the patches that came since release, it is all in the story quests you will do, there is not a major event that you will not experience.
Except that some zones changed in apparence.

Most of the events have been seasonal and should repeat. The ones you missed were Lightning, Dragon Quest XIII, and a FFXI event. I don't think those will repeat.

Ah, the cross dimensional battles of Lightning, the *puff puff*, and the insanity of Shantotto .. those were the days.

I presume by 'events before/after launch' you mean the backstory to the game, which was part of the (now shutdown) original version of FFXIV (version 1.0). ARR takes over from 1.0 and is set five years after 1.0's storyline, but you don't really need to know too much of the backstory as it's revealed in game (and a lot of 1.0's story has been retconned too).
