I have nothing against people greeding for whatever. Just because they don't have it leveled now, doesn't mean they won't in the future.
This is coming from someone with all battle classes at 50.

The system already put you out the roll, if you already have that unique item, and that suffice.
I'm planning to get 50 all jobs so I greed all. It will take some time to get a job to 50 but I'm happy its gear ready to use when time will come.
Then, as said a lot of times before, if someone needs badly some job item, play with that job. If not yet 50, there are the tomes, farm enough and then buy it.
I remember the early days of smaller sandbox MMOs very well. Unfortunately this is a theme park we are playing in which means rides and souvenirs and you are a guest just like everybody else. To make a counterpoint, I have started leveling my WAR once I received ifrits axe. I leveled up my MNK when I received King Mog's fists. A class below 50 is not an indicator that one will never use the item, the same that you throwing your loot on an alt is no guarantee it will do anything other than satisfy your collector's impulse.
I understand and empathize with your point but it all boils down to a belief that your needs or desires are more valid than a strangers; or greed as the loot window puts it.
It is literally the definition of courteous. If you don't need a piece of gear or feel another person needs it more it's courteous to pass on it. I honestly don't know why you have to say things like "fragile sense of self-importance" do you like turning gear into seals that much? Do you so fundamentally believe in the right of people to turn gear into seals without typing a few words like "Just say something if you need an item for an alt class" that you have to make these posts about how we are all bound by the loot window? These are the same posts I see every time someone makes a thread about loot and they seem just as farcical every time. Of course it's common courtesy to yield to people with greater need! "Oh well you can't possibly tell if someone actually is telling the truth, I technically need those seals, etc, etc" ... what nonsense!
My beliefs, desires, or comfort are not always more valid than a strangers. The worst part is the majority of these loot issues could be resolved if people talked it out but you've got one side pretending they're Gordon Gecko and the other side silently fuming about loot rolls. Honestly, I understand it has a lot to deal with the ever decreasing value of loot and the changes in standards that creates, but every time I read these painstakingly crafted posts that do nothing more than justify every single type of shitty behavior with relation to the loot window I can't help but roll my eyes.
It would certainly make it a lot easier to get loot for your mains, especially if the tables changed to accomodate situations like 4 bards by increasing the bow drop chance by 4. However, it would completely destroy getting gear for your alts, or just hoping for gear drops no one can need for you to sell for seals or put on the MB. Half my income from hm/ex roullette is in that form, would hate to see it go away.
While in general f your lv50 and they are lv10 (or not unlocked), they should let you have it. If they are lv40 and and your 50, its fair game. If you didn't mention your looking for X item, they would not know, and by say i mean at start of run not when loot drop and they already rolled.
The ONLY time that a lv50 you have that your not playing should truly have get priority is if you wanted to run on say MNK for mnk loot, but you switched to, say, your healer to allow the group to start since no healers were joining.
I ran WAR for levi to get brd and mnk weapons simply because of a need for tanks (and more a need for tank who knows how to do the fight) and group gave me priority for them simply for being nice and helping the run along. Say what you need, and be nice about it and be willing to use w/e jobs you can and life gets easier.
Same here.
If you wana gear an alt play the alt maybe, of course this could potentially worsen the DPS DF queues lol.It would certainly make it a lot easier to get loot for your mains, especially if the tables changed to accomodate situations like 4 bards by increasing the bow drop chance by 4. You can still make decent seal on greeding gear.
That being said I wouldn't be opposed to locking out players who don't have a class within 10 levels of the item being rolled on either ... maybe locking them out entirely is a bit harsh but it should definitely favour the person who has the class in question levelled and can use the item.

if they participate in the encounter and they are given the option to roll greed, its 100% not your fking business what they do with it or if they have the class. if they can clear the content they can roll on the loot. dont like it, tough shit. roll better
I got all the Mog weapons before I hit 50 and it was good motivation to level them to 50. But honestly, situations like in the OP can be easily prevented by forming your own parties and/or asking about loot rules when you start something that's going to have weapon or gear drops.

But you know, hey, I might level a BLM if I got the staff to drop? =D
